08 Mondeo advice

Looking at an 08 MONDEO 1.8TDCI 100PS LX. 220,000km on it. It's a small town dealer and mechanic and I've gotten lots of work done from him before and he has a good reputation. He's looking for €3850 and the nct is up in May but says he'll pay for the new nct and if any work needs to be done he'll do it for free. And from then on he'll give me 3 months warranty but says I can take the car now.

There's a few dings and scratches, broken trimming on the mirror where it hit something but nothing major. I'm wondering if it's a bit expensive? Looking around online they seem to be closer to €3000 maybe? Worth paying extra to a local mechanic that would look after you if something went wrong?

On a side note has anyone any idea how they are on fuel? I do 500km a week on the motorway. I wonder if its risky to be buying something with high enough miles like 220,000km?

Sorry for all the questions, thanks.

Asking price is pretty strong for a 10 year old Mondeo which is why he is probably offering so much in the way of warranty NCT. I'd get him to NCT it now which would give you a 2 year cert from now rather than a 12 month cert from May when the car is 10 years old.

Also ask him when was the timing belt done as Ford switched to a wet belt system in late 2007 which are known to fail prematurely. The replacement job is pretty steep on them, circa €800.

Cheers for that. After how many miles does the timing belt need doing out of interest?

Perhaps you should take a look at some of my recent threads OP...

Oh lord. Did you get any use out of it at all?

    Thanks for the heads up.

It's back in the garage first thing. I just wouldn't, I've had so many problems with the car despite buying it a few years back from a neighbour who had it a long time. Plus, the car was always serviced on time and parts replaced when they needed to be.

Was just onto mechanic, he just changed the belts recently. Weeks ago he said. He also said he can put it in for the NCT now.

I'm torn, I drove it and loved it! It'll be ready in two weeks but in the meantime he's trying to sort me a 1.6 Focus because that's what I was initially after.

I guess I have a decision to make.

    Appreciate the input thanks.

I think the price is mental! They can be had for less than 2 grand online. I appreciate the belts have been done which you would have to factor is when buying privately but still. The car is worth nowhere near 3.5k

Do you have a link to any decent looking ones in Leinster? Cheers.

I really don't have time to be search but I found this after a quick search. Half the price for the same car. Set up alerts for your parameters on adverts and donedeal. Best of luck.
