Advice on buying VW Golf Mk6 1.6 diesel auto

I am currently driving a 2002 Toyota Corolla 1.4 Petrol Manual and I am looking to change it to a 2012 VW Golf Mk6 1.6 Diesel Auto. I have been driving the Corolla for years and I really like the reliability and the low running cost on this car, while I am so tempting to buy the Golf I would like some advise that I am choosing the right car.

Any common problem for the VW Golf Mk6 1.6 diesel auto I should be aware of before I purchase it and is the Golf economic to run especially for the diesel automatic transmission?

The DSG box wouldn't really impact fuel economy, but it is inherently more complicated than a regular gearbox. It is a lovely gearbox to drive.
The 1.6 TDI has a bit of a reputation for needing EGR valves, which are very expensive. The emissions fix to this engine has had mixed results in terms of problems, so I'd prefer one that hasn't had it done if you can verify that.

If you want the reliability your Corolla has, but need an auto box and good fuel economy - a Prius would be an option.

Why not go for the MK7? 2012 was the last year of the MK6. I had a MK7 diesel for four years. Great car.

We had a 2010 1.6 tdi manual. We had loads of EGR issues that were never fully resolved by the dealer. Great car to drive and very economical but was sick of the constant problems and we sold it last month.

I wouldn't, they're actually a surprisingly unreliable car. I believe the MkVII is much better. See this link. The list of faults is massive.

If mods could hyperlink that would be great. On mobile here.

    Good & Bad:
Comfortable and quiet on the move, enjoyable to drive. Nicely trimmed with great attention to detail. 1.4 TSI sweeter to drive than a diesel.
7-speed dry clutch DSG problems. EA189 diesel emissions problems. Chain cam 1.4 TSI problems, especially Twincharger. EGR problems with 1.6 TDI. Demoted to 3 stars due to huge number of reported faults.

If you're heart is set on a mk6 I'd go for a high spec 2.0tdi over a 1.6 also nothing wrong with dropping back to 2010 or 2011 to save on purchase price.

Supposedly the fix impacts slightly on the cars performance but vw are covering a host of parts under goodwill as long as you get the fix and the car has some service history. I believe egr's dpf's and injectors are all covered as long as issues with them aren't caused by external factors such as dirty diesel.

One final thing to consider is whether you really need a diesel as these do need to be driven properly to keep all happy. As mentioned already a prius or Lexus ct200h could be an option to consider.
