I was stopped for speeding by a garda gun but I found it odd that he never said anything about insurance, tax or nct, I had gotten a new windshield 2 days prior and didn't have anything up. he asked for my licence, went into the car for 2/3 minutes and gave it back and said ill receive a notice in the post and then left. Also I didn't have my front N plates up.

    Whats going on there?

He checked the details of you and your car, when he went back to his, and it all came back in order.

And.... you'll be getting a ticket for speeding

You can be sure that this was checked before he got out of his car.

You have this thing called a registration plate - he has a computer / anpr system that checks your reg.

Once nothing shows as untoward, he's just interested in giving the speeding ticket.

You may also find he has done you for non display, but unfortunately you wont find out till it comes in the post.

But do they actually have reliable insurance details on data base?
Its not long since i was told that its all based on the info inputted when getting tax and that lots of cars show up as uninsured. In the case where someone buys tax for a year with only a few weeks left on insurance, once the declared end date for that policy comes around, the gardai have no further info until taxing again so you would be showing as uninsured.
Might all be crap but that is what i was told.

It was around 50% wrong when ANPR was first trialled. Total farce.

DB has since been improved to a level where they use it again. Just how good it is who knows, Gardai cant count murders effectively nevermind NCT.

    What difference does it make.
Windscreen disc is also very unreliable source of data.

First and foremost it doesn't show who is insured to drive...

Ah now, of course it makes a difference. If they have a perfect data base, that info will be at least as good as looking at a disc that they know to be legit whoxj at least establishes that a car has a policy in force. That would be a good start. Any suspicions after in relation to whether a driver is named can be clarified in normal way.
The point was made here that they dont need to check windscreen any more. How can you then say it makes no difference - so did the garda just ignore the blank screen or did he get full confirmation of tax test and insurance while sitting in his car or is there no difference?

When it comes to tax, the UK are loosing out on money when they abolished the paper discs.
The number of unlicensed vehicles on the road has tripled since the paper tax disc was abolished, government figures show.

The data, published every two years, shows that the government potentially lost out on £107m from 755,000 unlicensed vehicles last year.

Like them or not, the discs aren't going anytime soon.

The UK have a much better ANPR system than us and yet constantly on cop tv shows they phone the Ins Co. I wouldn't be surprised if ours was very unreliable and cops make a judgement call
