I have a single socket and a phone line in my hall want to take out the phone line and single socket and install a double socket but the space is too wide for a double socket

Maybe I'm missing something but from what I seeing in the two photos it looks like exactly the correct size?

Couldn't imagine the space is that much wider, take out both socket and phone socket and both back boxes, install a back box for a double socket and wire the new double socket, make sure electricity is off.

Any gaps left can be filled with fillers, if possible and there is a gap, perhaps center the new back box so its even on both sides, easier to fill and paint back over.

Thanks I will change back box and fill there is about about 2 thirds of an inch on either side

Would you not just replace the phone point with a single socket and have 2 single sockets side by side (assuming there’s a single box behind the phone post)

It definitely needs a twin box in there. A steel one is usually my preference, fitted level (existing singles look just a bit off) then neatly filled around, and then new twin socket fitted.

Yep, use a fine sandpaper and lightly sand it, make sure no dust and give it a lick of paint will be like there was never any hole there.
