Caught Speeding, car in mp/h after reset

So I have a golf from the uk that has been vrtd along time ago, I was installing footwell lights so I disconnected the battery, it has a digital speed reading in the middle that I use all the time as I prefer it over the convential dial.

After I reconnected the battery it reset it's self back to mph, I was driving home and was caught doing 87km/h in a 60km/h even though another 100 or so meters down it goes to 80km/h.

I know I should of noticed the difference in power but I just didn't, I was wondering if there could be any appeal for something like this, I do understand I was speeding and accepted it on the spot when I saw mp/h after the blue lights flashing, I don't mind paying the fine I'm just thinking of penalty points.

    *87kmh is about 55mph

    Any advice?

I think you would have a better chance telling them the dog eat your homework.
