Home Carer's Tax Credit and Jobseeker's Allowance

Asking for a friend. No, really :)

Can a husband claim home carer's tax credit if his wife is in receipt of jobseeker's allowance? He is in full time employment and they are jointly assessed. If yes then, is the amount she received considered as her income in order to calculate the tax credit or is it disregarded as being a non-taxable source of income?

    Thanks in advance

If the spouse is in receipt of Job seekers allowance only, this income is disregarded as it is non-taxable. If the spouse has no other source of income and there is a dependent child/relative being cared for in the tax year, the husband will qualify for this relief.

I dont think this is correct:

    From revenue website:
Income Tax is collected on Jobseeker's Benefit by reducing your annual tax credits and rate band. When you start working again, we will send you a new tax credit certificate showing the revised amounts.

Now it mentions disregarding 13 euro pew week.

On my P60 jointly assessed maternity and JSB has always reduced my credits and no allowance was made by way of the 13euro per week.

Also my wife's tax credit 1650 was reduced. I have no idea yet why this happened but I claimed home carers allowance for her 1 year and that coincides with the reduction.

    Jobseekers Benefit is taxable.
    Jobseekers Allowance is not.
    OP specifies Jobseekers Allowance.

my wife is on jsb. so I guess it's taxable. but revenue says that the first 13 euro per week is not. My p21 shows the full dsp amount.

This pushed her full earnings over the home carers limit in that year.

she also worked a little that tax year but revenue have set her flat rate expenses to 0. Her PAYE tax credits from 1650 to 700 euro. Meaning that we are no better off with the home carers allowance than previously at the 1650 credit.

We are jointly assessed and I have her personal tax credits.
