    Hi,
I was told a leak in my engine was due to power steering pump but after looking into it it was really just the EGR. Would it not be easily identifiable as to which was leaking i the first place when visually inspecting it??

    Cheers

The power steering pump would leak a red oily hydraulic fluid (maybe brown/black depending on how old the fluid is). The EGR valve itself can only leak exhaust gas - unless you mean the EGR cooler, which would be coolant (basically water and antifreeze - usually pink these days). The EGR valve is normally around the top of the engine, whereas the power steering pump would be much lower down (though the reservoir might be around the side somewhere), and the steering rack (which could also leak) is underneath the car.

If your car is modern enough to have an EGR cooler, I'd be surprised if it didn't also have electric power steering (no hydraulic fluid) - but I may be wrong on that.

    Hey Zilog,
Thanks a mill for your response. I was quoted for a new power steering pump and then a bit of back and forth and other inspections it ended up it was a egr leak at a 10th of the cost to fix. They quoted "Oil leak in EGR - All cleaned ok". When i questioned the original service they told me that until the parts were all taken apart that a correct diagnosis couldn. t be made as to what was leaking. Just sounded a bit strange to me. Looking from what you say there is something a little suss about it all. Anyway appreciate you responding.

    Cheers

Apparently EGR valves leaking oil can happen, seems more of an issue with VW diesels. Never experienced it myself...

    What car is it?

On modern cars it can be surprisingly difficult to diagnose a leak without pulling parts off as there is generally loads of grime and dirt on the block and access and visibility is usually terrible. As said though a PS leak is an easy enough one as it's a different fluid to engine oil.

    Cheers Zilog,
Still shouldnt expalin how they could say its one thing leaking when it is another. Its in an Audi engine. Even with my lack of knowledge I can spot the pump and the valve and if there was a leak I think i might even have been able to see where it was coming from. Obviously they should determine where the leak is before they would go ahead and quote what needs to be done!!! Grrrrrrrrrrrr

    Cheers
