So myself and hubbie to be have started thinking of what the first dance will be at our wedding. The songs that mean something to us are a bit fast for a slow dance, so I think we will have to get imaginative with it.
So just wondering did anyone have something slightly different for their first dance and how did it go??

We went for a faster song - we had party canons go off when the chorus started and got the bridal party to join us at that stage - I think it went well and people seemed to enjoy it :)

We didn't have a favourite song or 'our' song so had to think laterally. We chose 'Ho Hey' by the Lumineers as we both liked it and the lyrics were appropriate. It starts off slow so we had the slow dance bit and then when it speeds up we had a bit of a jive and waved everyone on to the floor to join us. It worked out really well.

I'm having "Stand Inside Your Love" by Smashing Pumpkins for my first dance. The lyrics say it all.

OP, consider looking on Spotify or something for cover versions of those songs. We had a fab version of Diamonds by Rihanna as our first dance.

Absolutely nothing stopping you from having a "fast dance" as your first dance either. You can do whatever you want, it's your wedding day. :)

How about D-I-V-O-R-C-E by Tammy Wynette.

We had Nothing Else Matters too! It’s as close to a ballad that we both would like.

    Always loved this for a first dance;

Nick Cave - INTO MY ARMS
I don’t believe in an interventionist God
But I know, darling, that you do
But if I did I would kneel down and ask Him
Not to intervene when it came to you
Not to touch a hair on your head
To leave you as you are
And if He felt He had to direct you
Then direct you into my arms
    Into my arms, O Lord
    Into my arms, O Lord
    Into my arms, O Lord
    Into my arms
And I don’t believe in the existence of angels
But looking at you I wonder if that’s true
But if I did I would summon them together
And ask them to watch over you
To each burn a candle for you
To make bright and clear your path
And to walk, like Christ, in grace and love
And guide you into my arms
    Into my arms, O Lord
    Into my arms, O Lord
    Into my arms, O Lord
    Into my arms
    But I believe in Love
And I know that you do too
And I believe in some kind of path
That we can walk down, me and you
    So keep your candles burning
And make her journey bright and pure
    That she will keep returning
    Always and evermore
    Into my arms, O Lord
    Into my arms, O Lord
    Into my arms, O Lord
    Into my arms

Oh this is one of my favourite songs. Bit of a tear jerker for first dance i think though.

We had Queen - You're my best friend :-) it was fun and total cheese at the same time!

Not married but the first song is something I've always thought about and I was always convinced it would be Mazzy Star 'fade into you' as its just an amazingly magical song perfectly paced for the first dance. Unfortunately the subject matter of the song seems more bittersweet, possibly a break up or unrequited love. But hey you can't have it all. Other candidates would be, the pretenders 'stand by you' the yeah, yeah, yeahs 'maps'. Sufjan Stevens ' to be alone with you' Damien Rice 'the blowers daughter' and more recently Lord Huron' the night we first met'. Unfortunately Lord Hurons is more a break up song too. I guess I just love break up songs, they're so much better than love songs.

Brief hijack of this thread...we are hoping to learn a choreographed dance for our (alternative!) first dance song. Nothing too fancy or formal, but I've seen it before and it's a nice personalised piece of the day I like.

Has anyone done this before, and if so which company did you use? There are several 'first dance teacher' companies going, I'd love a recommendation for one if anyone has any experience with them. They run at about 250-350 quid for the lessons so I want to make sure it's money well spent.

Easy to dance to songs that are romantic are the best I think for “first dance” nerves! I often feel sorry for the groom because they’re terrified of treading on the dress or whatever.
Taking you Home by Don Henley or Someone Like You by Van is ideal and sooo romantic and easy to shuffle around to.

We had Bell X1s Velcro for our first dance... our band did an amazing version of it, kinda slowed it down in a way but it didn't sound too different. It was great ☺

We considered asking the band to rearrange "our song" but we have now almost decided on a different song from the same band...
Now just need to figure out how to dance

    I've had some pretty cool ones; some that come to mind are Gold digger and We are your friends (not strictly first dances as the couples didn't want to dance but to get everyone up on the floor.) Also Father John Misty - When You're Smiling And Astride Me and Beirut - Postcards from Italy whose last verse is apt;

And I will love to see that day
    That day is mine
When she will marry me outside with the willow trees
And play the songs we made
    They made me so
And I would love to see that day
    The day was mine

Piece of advice for anyone wearing a dress: make sure you can actually dance in it. We found out on the day that my wifes dress was a style which meant she really struggled to move backwards in it so our lovely waltz was curtailed! :pac::pac: Still delighted with our first dance but just a bit of a tip you mightn't think of. Likewise make sure your shoes aren't leather soled/will slip easily on a dancefloor.

Very good advice. When I got my alterations done the lady put a button tie-up both on the dress and train which was great, and I changed into more comfy sandals for dancing. Those sandals were hands down the best 30e I spent on the wedding, I was flying around in them all night.

Some of the songs I loved most for a first dance just weren't suitable at all, lyrics-wise, such as Mick Flannery's Safety Rope.

We had Cake Sale - Some Surprise
Like the above most songs we liked didn't have suitable lyrics or were too fast for our crap dancing lol!

Where abouts in the country are you (assuming you are in fact in Ireland?)?
Might give a better chance of useful recommendations

Apologies, rookie mistake. I'm in Dublin.

Our first dance is still up in the air but the front runner at the moment is You & Me Song by the Wannadies because it has the slow dance elements but the chorus has the bit of craic we want too so seems like best of both worlds.

My only concern is would the switching of tempo from verse (slow) to chorus (fast) and make the dance a bit awkward? My idea was to bring in the wider crowd on the second chorus since it doesn't slow down from there to the end of the song

Anyone had this song or seen it done?

We have a band we love so we are probably going to go with one of their songs now. Will pick a song that we can dance to. Should be fun... I'm not the most graceful creature in the world!! Fortunately he is so he should make me look better.

That was our first dance - like I mentioned we had party cannons and bridal party job us for the chorus and we all just went crazy!

It was great craic but we weren't overly stressed about how we looked :)
