Its the time I scout around for my annual review the rates festival !

Im on Energia web save 33% which is very cheaper and from what I see I will not beat it this year , BG and Airtricity are the closest

    anyone any insights

The bonkers,i.e. site is a complete nonsense, if I plug in the custom tarrif and bi months bill of 200 euros , it claims my annual bill is 1700 euros (what part of I pay 200 every 2 months ,does it not understand )

it then claims that a tariff from Bord Gais, which is higher for day and night rate will save me 400 euros a year,

utter BS , rang Bonkers, girl entered the numbers got the same answer, was perplexed, " getting back to me " !!!!!

also be very careful using bonkers and entering in the name of your discount plan, Bonkers essentially computes whats happens when you leave that plan and revert to standard units , and compares that with its proposed plan , thats Bonkers, cause obviously you are not going to stay on a non incentivised plan

Mod Note: *cough* easy with the accusations toward particular companies.... particularly in the title...

I ring them all every year and ask them what rates they can give me. Standing charges are roughly the same. I also ring my current supplier and ask them can they offer me "a first time customer discount" to stay on another year. They always do.
Go with the cheapest then. I've been with airtricity for a few years but switched to Energia this year

Already done that with Energia , they will not maintain the discounted rate and have offered me a new rate that is above BG and Air. Energy discounted rates are way below current plans , even with discounts , so I expect Energia was trawling for customers last year , but simply expect people too stay on and get screwed

Hey , I discovered a " glitch " , just confirmed by Energia , the web site miscalculates and shows savings that dont exist , quote " the engineers are working on the site right now "

    a Glitch !!!!, some glitch

yeah it was always Air who offered to put me back on a discounted rate.

Energia are getting my final meter reading 1 year to the day after I switched to the 33% discount plan.

Happens to be around the time I'll be moving out and into my new apartment anyway.
My parents are moving into my current house and I'm moving them to an Airtricity dual fuel bundle.

    Personally.... I have plans. :D

Switch to Just energy. Use 10k kWh and pay for 3.5k kWh :D

I'm afraid I'm reducing my commute from 200km to just under 20km (so dropping my commute energy requirement below 3kWh) and the new apartment has a little solar PV too. None of the Just Energy plans really work for me.

My plans involve timeshifting power from night rate with a home battery.
So I'll have 100% of my electricity consumption either self-consumption from solar or on nightsaver.

I need backup power for my lab/computer room equipment anyway which I currently use a pair of massive 10,000VA lead acid powered UPS units for (plus a bunch of small UPS).
I'm going sell the big UPS units, install a powerwall 2 for backup power / timeshifting, and keep the small UPS units to protect equipment from surges etc.

Probably not going to see the battery until summer though :(

@cros13: How did you manage to get a PV panel and car charger installed in an apartment? I'm fortunate in that I have a storage unit behind my allocated underground parking space, which already had double sockets connected to my meter (and 13A socket is fine for my Prius as it only does 2.2kW charging anyway) - but I'd say this kind of setup is quite rare.

They added just over 100 250W panels of micro inverter based PV on the roof with a few connected to each apartment's panel during construction to bring the BER up from A3 to A2.

    Were BG really cheaper?

The rates for Urban 24hr customers is:
    Energia (33% disc): 13.25c/kWh
    BG (24% disc): 13.99c/kWh

Did you get more than a 24% discount from BG?

For rural nightsaver (me), Energia are also cheaper than BG.

    Energia: 14.52/6.96
    BG: 15.33/7.58

Energia wouldn't put me back onto the intro rate. BG were 24% cheaper than my current. Don't have a night saver as the car is generally not at home during the nights.

    hi ,
am currently going through the whole "new to ev" threads etc.

with regards to changing supplier - I'm with Elect-Ireland and will goto Energia - when nearer ev purchase.

Q - when is the best time to change - close to end of the 2 month billing period ?

If requesting a nightmeter over the next 2 months - will I request it thru E_Ireland or Energia or does it make a difference.
How long to get meter changed out - approx. Do ESB then inform my provider to change my rates ?

    Thx

I don't think it makes a difference when you change.

It's the ESB who change your meter, and they tend to be pretty fast.

Energia were the best price for me, due a review again shortly.

Can you not get Just Energy, karltimber? Fixed price so you can your charge EV for free. And the rest. Working great for me :p

    Will look Unkel

    I use 6000 units a year (family of 5) at a cost of e1200 a year.

Like the JE - Ratesaver Fixed 12 month - approx e904 for the year ..
and use JustEnergy without a nightrate for a year ?

I take it to just use JE for 1 year and then change to Energia or the like.

are you on a nightrate meter with JE ?
If I use 6k units now, would doing 20k in a year use the other 4k, to stay under the 10k limit.

    Thanks
    Thx - K

Yep. I used to use 3500 units a year (also family of 5) at a cost of €700 a year. That's why JE offered me a fixed price deal for €720 for the year. This year I'll be going well over 10000 units :D

And yes, it is safe to assume JE will not offer me the same deal again come renewal :p I'll just switch to Energia. And yes I went night rate meter when I got the EV. It is completely free to have a night rate meter installed. You pay about €50 more per year in standing charges and you pay about 1c more for day rates. But night rates are less than 7c/kWh. Car is charging right now. From 2% to 100% also heating the cabin up to 23C for departure at 07:50. All for free. I've done almost 13k km in the car and I reckon it has cost me about €25 in electricity. Take that you cancerous diesels!

  • Moderators, Home & Garden Moderators Posts: 1,928 Mod ✭✭✭✭karltimber

ok, I drive 25k km a year, and use 6000 units a year at home

    when I go EV and night rate, I will add another 4290 units (5 * 16.5 * 52). 100km * leaf * weeks.
This will take me over the 10k units allowed and I will be charged the variable rate after - 18c day & 11c night for the 290 extra units. correct ?
Unkel - if you are going over the 10k allowance too - will the extra variable rate still make it worth while. Are you on the unlimited nightrate tarrif T10 12M ?

    K

Yeah I'm on unlimited. I'll keep an eye on my consumption later on in the contract, but yes if I go over 10k kWh, they will put me on their variable rates. I might stay within the 10k and I might put solar PV on my roof this year :)

Switching time. Is that offer (€720 per year) still available as I dont see it on their website? Or do you have to call in?

it doesnt matter when you change, the billing is worked out based on the units at the point of changeover

You request a dual tarrif meter through the retail energy supplier you have your account with at the time , they inform ESBN , who actually carry out the installation, about 2 weeks to change out in my experience

Note if your house has old wiring and specifically hasn't the neutral and earth connected, you may fail the loop impedance test and the installer will not fit the car charger
