i have been trying to convince myself to watch Silence for the last while. it seems like a movie you will need a lot of patience for but i just can't get past the presence of Andrew Garfield. i cant think of an actor who ends up in so many credible movies who i dislike so much. i really just can't see it.

he was the worst spiderman so far (probably on a par with toby in 3)

he was cringe worthy awful and schmaltzed it to the high heavens in hacksaw ridge. he made vince vaughan look good. that is something (i lie...they were both terrible)

in the brilliant social network i was hoping he'd get screwed by zuckerberg.

in the gritty red riding he just did not look the part of feel like he was of the time

and im not having any of this Boy A sh!te either. completely over acted. i know he is supposed to be unhinged but feck me there isn't an ounce of proper acting in that. that scene in the night club....give that fella a wide berth. probably exacerbated by the fact he is playing opposite the magnificent peter mullan

of course there is also the presence of adam driver in silence too....maybe best to leave it altogether

Nearly 3 hours of my life gone watching this snore fest. Stay well clear. Watch Mr. Mercedes instead. Best show I've seen in years.

Completely agree. One of the most boring films I've watched. I actually started laughing at one stage.

Agree. I cant watch Garfield either. He's one of those actors I cant stand for some unknown reason. Any film he's in I steer clear of.
It could be that long neck and pin head of his but i cant be sure.

I agree 3. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but he just came across as such a total pain in The Social Network that you were hoping he'd get nothing. Very unsympathetic actor I feel.

I certainly wouldn't have been fan of Garfield mainly thanks to those two stinking Spiderman movies but I thought he was excellent in Hacksaw Ridge

I wouldn't blame Garfield for how useless those Spiderman movies were. I think he did what he could, but there were problems everywhere else.

He's quite good in Hacksaw Ridge and 99 Homes.

Zuckerburg is a twerp so he played the role pretty well.

Andrew Garfield reminds me of those "matinee idols" beloved of the British film industry in the '50's and '60's. People like Kenneth More. At the time he was really considered the British version of a Rock Hudson or Cary Grant! To be honest the best role I've seen him in over the last few years was in 99 Homes, and even then the star of the film was the great Michael Shannon.

He was fantastic in Never Let Me Go. That was a really sensitive, measured performance imo.
Never thought he was a good fit for Spiderman. Not charming enough on screen.

He's a good actor and I find him a very likeable screen presence but he has that DiCaprio problem of looking too young. There's also something very modern about him so I don't quite buy him in period roles. I thought he was a great choice as Spider-man but was let down by terrible scripts/films. I thought he was excellent in 99 Homes.

I thought he was absolutely fantastic in Boy A. Was actually the first thing I even saw him in

I wasn't crazy about Silence. It's a typical Scorsese movie with no catharsis or redemption but without the violence and comedy that makes some of his other films easier to digest. I'm not sure there's anything wrong with it that isn't also wrong with all his films. That's just his style.

A lot of Scorsese's NY critic fanboys loved it, though I thought they mostly failed to explain why. There's been a lack of good critical writing on Scorsese in recent years. Too much fawning. He deserves better.

As I've said here previously, his films definitely deserve more rigorous analysis IMHO. Taxi Driver was startling and original, Goodfellas a classic, The Age Of Innocence quite good. On the other hand, Raging Bull was a crushing bore, The Gangs Of New York a brilliant mess and, like The Aviator, centrally miscast. The Departed was just an annoying Nicholson vehicle. A hugely talented but also less than consummate film maker.
