Hi there peps. I’ve noticed that there already is a similar thread here about the Aussie flu but I’ve noticed that the discussion is more towards work and sick days. So thing is I’ve organised to have my two year old go to crèche twice a week for 3 hours. Really only for him to socialise and play in the company of other children as it’s benificial. So now reading about this fatal flu that’s around I’m having second thoughts and am really thinking it’s the wrong time of year all toghether. Are you worried about your child? Of course I understand if someone is stuck and has no choice but to leave little one at a crèche. Just wondering what is everyone’s take on the severity of the Aussie Flu.

It's a flu that's a harder hitting than bog standard flu but is actually not the flu that's actually causing real issues in Ireland right now. It just has a catchy name and drives clicks for newspaper websites. If your child is otherwise healthy they'll be fine and if you are worried, the flu vaccine is free but doesn't prevent all flus.

Most deaths or complications caused by flu are related to the person having an underlying condition already.

I understand your worry. It's natural that while at creche, they will pick up bugs, given that kids generally have no concept of covering up etc. However, my doctor told me that them picking up the colds etc are all part and parcel of building their immune systems so either you keep them in creche and they do that now or you wait until they go to school and they will catch the bugs then. If your child is generally healthy, they should be able to fight them off reasonably well. You know your child best.

Interestingly My creche this morning had signs up saying to not bring kids with Flu in due to concerns with the B strain (that's not Aussie flu)
