Tax Refund timing

    Hey everyone,

    Happy Tax refund season!

I filed for my P21 last week and expect to take a week to get the amount refunded via bank transfer but when I was looking around for a general timeline (probably impossible with a tax office) I came across a lot of different answers.

I called Revenue and they told me two to three weeks which is fine but then I checked my refund from last year and once the P21 was issued, the funds were in my account in less than a day.

    Is it really completely random?

If all is in order it's issues within 48 hours as its a automated system. A percentage are held for random manual verification and others which trigger as unusual are held for manual verification. Manual verification can take a number of weeks at this time of year due to the volume of submissions and errors made.

Kind of related so don’t want to start another thread but do you need to have the p60 from your employer before you can do the p21?

If it helps any years previously I’ve done the p21 online I usually could see the statement within a couple of days and would have the refund a day or two later.

Its usually best to wait for the p60 as there is less chance of incorrect figures being input.

So, my P21 was issued on Friday. If it needed to be manually reviewed, would I be informed?

Only if proofs of claim/pay and tax details were required.

Do they do inspections once the p21 is issued?

Of course. Any claim/review made can be subject to an intervention in the future. For example, claims for health expenses made in one year may be reviewed later for supporting documentation.

You must retain them for 6 years otherwise it may be difficult to validate the claim.
