[Video Included] Noise when depressing clutch.

    Hi all.

I've picked up a noise in the C5 that's come on in the last few days.

There's an obvious click when I'm depressing the clutch pedal about halfway through its travel. That's when I'm in gear and going to neutral. Noise is more obvious in Reverse, however that's probably down to road noise. Generally happens when downshifting through gears at a higher speed, perhaps when at a lower speed but I can't hear it.

Clutch pedal feels normal. No slippage when under heavy load. Goes into and out of gears fine. No other noises in gear/neutral or when the clutch is fully depressed.

    Any ideas? Release bearing?

Noise is coming as I'm depressing the clutch.

Could be wrong but to me your engine is rocking back and forth when your releasing the clutch.

To me, visually, the noise is the engine settling back on the mount.

I thought that too. The mounts seem okay however. If it was the mounts, I'd be expecting the noise independent of clutch action, like when in gear and going from zero throttle to 100% throttle straight away.

If it’s not one of the mounts then to me it would appear to be a gearbox problem. Bearing seizing in the box putting a load on the engine... foot on clutch releases the load.

Can you have someone look st the engine when you start car(with foot off clutch)... and see if engine rocks.

Have you been under car with a crowbar to properly inspect mounts??

Nope, I've not got the tools or the facilities in the place I'm living now. Can't really get under it.

It's going to garage this week. Hopefully get to the bottom of it.

Hopefully it’s just a mount so... see if you can rock the engine yourself when it’s not running, it shouldn’t be too easy.

It looks like a load on the engine is suddenly being released as the clutch disengages. Assuming the car is in neutral, there shouldn't be any load. As Marty says, it could be resistance in the gearbox. Does the car try to move when in neutral,?
