Ivan Yates - a feminised man?

I've noticed it a few times with him. Today I heard him refer to himself as a "hopeless dinosaur" when referring to how his wife shows him a few things on the mobile phone. I'm guessing that in reality, he's probably quite good with technology, just that he feels that these are the sort of jokes that older men are kind of expected to make now a days?!

And recently, on an issue about women in the work place, I heard him say that "shur the women are a way more savvy than the men". Again, it just seems like the vague sort of things that people feel they're expected to say. Also, George Hook was also very quick to make himself out to be a fool in comparison to the lovely Ingrid.

Is Ivan too in touch with feminine values and female expectations.

They sound like examples of self deprecation alright. Why describe it as ‘feminised’?

I guess what I meant is that he'd be very conscious of feminine values. It's almost like he's portraying himself as one of those dumb men in you'd see in advertisements. With me, I just look upon him as a 'father of the bride' sort of guy - could maybe picture him carrying the wife's shoes around. I think of him when I see the man in that renault ad on the late late show.

It's just something I relate to because I think the same kind of thing happened to my father. I've seen some footage of my dad before he got married, and he was a completely different man... seemed a lot quicker to speak his his mind. The mother would've been the boss in our house. And with my two sisters, whenever they'd throw a tantrum, he'd never step up and call them out on their bull****... instead his approach would be a sort of "look for the sake of peace, I'll just leave it be".

I wonder if it's part of his schtick. That bumbling man is used to sell things to women like TV soaps and ads aimed at women. Similarly totty birds are used to sell things to men. Ivan might be playing to his audience.

Interestingly men undergo biological changes which change their behaviour as they age. Lower testosterone which might explain the change. Gender roles that have been adhered for decades tend to merge later in life. That also tends to be the same time as retirement so all kinds of changes are happening at around that stage of life.

Why do you think your dad changed like that?

Maybe, he's a politician after all.

Well I couldn't be entirely sure. Maybe people who are too good-natured are easy to take advantage of.

Ivan Yates has been married to the same woman (Deirdre, a teacher) since his 20s. He seems very happy. She stood by him when things went badly for him a few years ago.

I think his "hopeless male" is an act for his show.

Whatever the reason for his act, I think a lot of men would like to be in his position and happily married to the same woman for decades.
