Family member looking at purchasing a brand new car direct from dealer.

New Car price is approx 23k which will be funded by:

    “Scrappage” of 3K.

Buyer will have approx 4K cash.

So balance of cost of car which will be met by garage arranged finance approx 16k.

What kind of discount would usually be possible based on above figures? Would buyer be better off trying to get a few added extras or better to try and reduce price?

Buyer has never bought a new car before so really doesn’t know what happens.

No room for haggling as far as I know because you have got the 3k scrappage. Others may tell you more but I think scrappage deals generally mean you are paying full list price.

If the car traded in under scrappage is worth less than 3k you are doing well anyway.

    It’s worth well under 3k!

    Thanks for the response.

It depends what the car is too.

Yep if it's an in demand model with a waiting list, hard to haggle. If something a dealer is struggling to shift you have a bit to play with. But you are probably already doing well so no harm in pushing for a bit more, maybe a free service pack or something. It's a battle of wills between the buyer and the seller, who wants the deal more. Best of luck

Even aside from that, some cars just aren't good value, so you'd need to be getting a few grand off the RRP.
