Hi all. I was wondering if you could be made permanent after you were lucky enough to get a temp CO contract in the Civil Service? I guess it would be rare if it did happen, right? I'm asking cause it's my dream job and I know the competition will be opening soon enough for the summer period. TIA.

No, there is zero chance of getting a permanent job from the TCO competition. You need to apply for the CO competition to be considered. You cant get a job you didnt apply for in the civil service.

No you would need to apply for the CO comp. TCO is just temporary. The new CO should be open in may/June 2018

I mean, your tenure could be extended, as was mine, while waiting to hear the results of the C.O. competition, which thankfully was successful.

Was really thankful to where I was working, they went above and beyond.

I doubt it really. Its called TCO for a reason. Mostly its for covering someone on leave. But if you apply for a permanent CO competition when its advertised then you are certainly in the running for permanent.

Under Irish law, you cannot be employed on successive fixed-term contracts by an employer for more than four years, and there have been a small number of TCOs who were made permanent in this context. However, it is very rare for this to happen, but if you are appointed as a TCO you will at least gain experience that will assist in the CO competition.

No, I am currently a TCO on a longish contract in an area where they use quite a few TCOs each year. I finish in the Spring and more TCOs will be recruited several weeks later. They employed a number of COs the week after I started and will employ more COs this year. But I won't be considered because I am a TCO.

The training for a TCO is different to that of a CO.

However it would appear that TCO experience will stand to you going forward and a number of COs have had previous TCO experience.

Yes there is. The union took a case before for staff in the passport office and won. There's currently a case on at the moment for another.

When will the TCO comp open?

I think it should be open over the next few weeks/month. Not 100% sure though as I have never applied for it myself
