2011 Renault Grand Scenic clutch issue

    Hi all...

My Wife's Grand Scenic cut out and she couldn't get it into gear. The clutch pedal was just going to the floor with no resistence. We got it towed to our local Renault Garage, the guy who towed it reckoned it wasn't the clutch, but the hydraulic pipe between the pedal and the clutch (please excuse my lack of knowledge/the correct terms for this).

The Renault Garage looked at the car and also reckoned it was the pipe. They said it had come off, even though there are 2 clips holding it on. So the pipe wasn't burst or damaged, it had just come off. They said they'd never seen it happen before and they said they were going to reattach it and then drive it a little to see how it is, and that it should only cost 1-2 hours labour.

Later that day they rang to say that it's reattached, but to fix it properly would cost €1,900! That's a bit of a leap from a couple of hours labour! The exact words in the report are as follows:

'During inspection Technician found that pipe attaching to clutch slave cylinder had come detatched. Refit pipe and bled clutch hydraulic system. Technician tested and recommended that flywheel and three piece clutch to be replaced, as pedal is extremely heavy. If problem reoccurs clutch kit and fly wheel will need to be replaced, approx. €1,900'

Now, surprisingly enough, we don't have €1,900! We have the car home again, and we're going to get another opinion on it of course, but I was wondering if anyone else here has any thoughts on this diagnosis?

    Thanks...

Its probably going to need a clutch and flywheel alright. Once is goes heavy replacement is the only option and too much pressure on the fitting will have it popping off again.

That would be the going rate in a Renault dealer. Better off getting an independent garage to fit a clutch and flywheel

Thanks for your replies, I appreciate them.

Just a quick follow-on question. What exactly is meant by the pedal going heavy? Is that just something that can happen over time, is it a fault with the clutch, something else?

    Thanks...

Don't get that done in a main dealer, you should find an independent garage to do it considerable cheaper

clutch disc has to move on clean spigot shaft but usually the fingers on pressure plate go stiffer making pedal harder.
if car does have duel mass flywheel it could be worn out it does need to be checked out/replaced.
thinking time for repair could be listed as 8hrs? no autodata here to check time.
yes thinking it could be done cheaper. Remember that they need to replace hydraulic bearing as some dont to keep prices lower and it usually leaks later.

You wont be getting much change out of 1000 for the job at an independent though. More palatable but still not great news.

Thanks everyone, your replies are much appreciated. We'll be going to a local independant garage we've used before...
