Is it just me or are more people covering their reg plate?

I've noticed more and more cars with dirty reg plates to the point they're illegible. Is this actually a penalty point offence? I noticed it's an offence to drive with an inaccurate plate or without one, but one that's illegible? Has anyone ever heard of someone getting done for this?

Makes me feel like a bit of a sucker, since these people are immune to speed cameras and the m50 toll.

It's the winter the roads are ****e. This is nothing new for this time of year.

People wash their cars when the weather is a bit more decent it's just how it is tbh

I had my car washed 2 wks before Xmas for the holidays. Come Xmas day my car was filthy!!!! Hubby works in a quarry and going over there destroys the car.

I don't mean to have it that bad but there's not much we can do.

Nobody gives two figs if your car is dirty or clean.

You can use a wet rag and wipe the number plate so it’s legible. Sames goes for the rear lights.

People who don’t should be given an on the spot fine or points.

I noticed that during December, not just on the major roads outside Dublin but city centre too. About 10% of cars had illegible plates due to filth

1 in 3 cars in a car park in the south were totally covered. AGS dont care.

Not just you op, I see this everywhere, this and broken lightbulbs, everywhere. No reason why the sole of your shoe can’t clean off the reg plate. I think driving without one, and this is the equivalent albeit it non display, should be a penalty point offence

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 540 ✭✭✭OttoPilot

Does anyone know if it's actually possible for AGS to fine people for this?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,318 ✭✭✭Miscreant

I remember seeing a guy pulled over on the Naas road a few years ago by AGS and made wipe his rear numberplate clean with his shirt sleeve. I was in traffic at the time and could see him gesturing to the guard that he had nothing to wipe with. His face dropped when the guard pointed at his shirt and got him to use it.
I noticed a lot of vehicles with filthy plates over the Christmas break on my travels. Beggars belief really considering it only takes 5 seconds to wipe it. I'll consider a super soaker of soapy water out the window next time to wash it for them in traffic. 😋

Not being cocky here but if the weather is really bad the number plate is dirty by the time I'm in the next bigger town when I clean it off at home. Trying to keep it clean all the time but driving on sh1te roads can cause it go dirty after 3 bends.

    This is from December 2016.

Not able to find the relevant fine in Ireland but it is £1000 in UK.

I was walking along the docks one day a very clean car passed. Very clean except the number plate was so filthy I couldn't make it out at close quarters. Moment later a Garda walking towards me stepped out in front of the vehicle and stopped it. This was absolutely blatantly disguising the reg though

On an awful lot of new cars particularly hatchbacks and crossovers the rear reg plates tend to get covered in sh1te very quickly due to where they're placed and the aerodynamics of the cars design.

I've seen rakes of older yokes where the reg is up fairly high and despite the cars being filthy the regs are still pretty legible.

It's a good idea to take a walk around your car at least once a week anyway.
Especially at this time of year.
Check lights, clean lights and clean number plates.

Slightly off topic but what's the story with people who different reg fonts generally with no EU IRL signs and smaller harder to read fonts sometimes even with yellow or black backgrounds saw a garda stop someone in a van with one of these strange fonts it's generally boyracer types and BMWs that have them and I have they look very tacky. Are these legal surely all regs should have the same font and general look.

The regulations depend on the age of the vehicle.
This gives details and if you follow the links in it there is more legislation etc. -

IR cameras can read thru the dirt on number plates.

When testing ir cameras in the states, one police force placed a sheet of paper over the licence plate, and the ir camera was still able to read it.

(Police were testing various anpr/alpr systems)

That's why all number plates are required to be retroreflective .

I noticed during the boom that lots of cars were going around with filthy number plated, obviously too busy to wash their cars. When the recession hit I noticed a lot of cars going around with the number plate worn out so that you couldn't read it, too much time on their hands. Now we are back to the boom it looks like people have stopped washing their cars again. I don't see many cars with number plates worn out now.

No salt required Dakota Dan.... I assume you are looking for a pinch of it but I can tell you I'm not a liar or prone to hyperbole! My comment about the guy having to wipe his numberplate with his shirt happened between the Newland's cross and Kingwood junctions during rush hour on the Bass road about 10 years ago.

Fully believe you Miscreant. At least 8 years ago, my wife was a passenger on my motorcycle and just on the outskirts of Kilkenny city we were stopped at a Gárda checkpoint. The weather had been $h!te and the motorcycle was filthy. Gárda Hitler insisted that we cleaned the number plate before we left the checkpoint. I really appreciated his vigilance and prayed for his happy demise. :D

The law needs to change before optical character recognition-ai-traffic-webcams start tracking everyone’s complete movements.

The tech to completely destroy freedom and privacy is coming. Now is the time to consider the human rights aspect - before some effed up regime takes over and any opposition is easily snuffed.

So I reckon licence plates should only be on your drivers licence so only a requesting guard gets to see it instead of analysis bots and databases gradually influencing and eventually controlling our movements.

He has a point to a degree, sure even shopping centre car parks are already reading reg plates, and the gangland lads have number plate reading cameras on there houses that can flag up if the same car passes by a few times a night etc..

If that tracking trend increases to everything we do then I might have to drive around with a dirty reg myself :pac:

My aul lad got pulled on the Lucan road maybe 3 or 4 years ago. His plate was a bit worn and apparently a passing garda cars anpr wasn't able to read it properly. He was told to get a new plate (which he did) and was sent on his way.

You havent had to drive around Mullingar back roads this month and drive across swimming pools in the middle the road
Around Mullingar most Number plates are covvered in mud from the first deep poool of rain water they went through this very wet winter

Anyway all cars sold in EU controled Europe after 2017 must have a ONSTAR in them .
Basicaly ONSTAR is a dedicated mobile phone system built into the new cars that constantly communicates the cars identity location speed etc to big brother systems .

A Garda car can be fitted out to detect the identity of all new 2017 and 2018 cars and can even send a signal to kill the engine to stop the car .

Later the ONSTAR can be made to report the car for every single speeding offence it makes real time and deduct the points from the licence and charge the speeding fine before the car has even arrived to its destination .

You might set out from your house to go to work and break the speed limit slightly 6 times on the way to work to get a robotic text message your licence has taken away as all twelve points are gone and now your disqualified to drive any-more

In ten years time most cars will be ONSTAR and this will mean the number plate wont be issue even if it is covered in concrete the Garda will still know the reg

Welcome to 21st century we ant in Kansas anymore

In case anyone is wondering, this is somewhat true:

The rest is complete BS, on a number of reasons which I don't really feel the effort to get into here.

I actually thought ONSTAR was an opel trademark word saw a 151 X5 today filthy couldn't read rear plate.
