Bought phone on donedeal via bank transfer

I bought a phone from a guy on donedeal for 435E, Galaxy S8, the guy was mentioning how he had a shop called fj phones in Naul Village and how they only accept payment via cash in hand collection from shop or bank transfer. I had my doubts at first, but then he gave me the imei number of the phone, which gave me a bit confidence, we agreed on postage since I don't live in Dublin. He was telling me how hell post it on Sunday and I should have it on Tuesday.(this was at around 5pm) I found this very weird, because post does not usually operate on weekends, especially on New Years eve, but I guessed DHL might be different. He said he will give me tracking number tomorrow (Monday) or early Tuesday at 6am. I messaged him today, and he did not respond to me, however I messaged him with another account asking for the phone, he responded to me, I went on further stating I want to buy the S8 but this time I said I will collect, he said, they are out of stock for a week.
Now the question is, is there any way I can get my money back via bank transfer, I have his bank details, I also have his mobile number ( I did not get a chance to call him) I doubt the money would have transferred fully, as I am with BOI and he is with AIB. Is this a lesson for me or is there light at the end of the tunnel ?

    €435 Seems cheap

If he told the other person they're out of stock, is that not a good sign?

I don't think you can recall the money. Ask him again for the tracking number.

Oh, and how did the IMEI number give you confidence? Were you able to check this somewhere?

Hes gotten back to me now, after my thread of calling the cops I suppose, said he called DHL and they told him the tracking number will be issued by night time, and I should have it by tomorrow. Also asked if I could ring bank asking them when the money will be in his account. Took down all his ads, I asked him about this, he said they need updating.

Does sound dodgy to be fair. Donedeal (and all other online P2P selling sites) have a fair chunk of fraudulent dealings for things like phones. On both sides. You're either sending him money and trusting he'll send the phone or he sends the phone before he receives the money and ends up with nothing.

I would have thought DHL would have the tracking number straight away. Do you have his username for Donedeal? Keep a record of everything, just in case.

Hopefully the Guards go after him. So many people like this out there and nothing ever seems to be done.

Not very easy to set up a bank account without proper ID so they should be able to find him.

So many and yet it's impossible to have any sympathy for them. Would you give some random lad in the pub 400 quid for him to return with it in a week?

Report it to your bank as fraud and give his IBAN and they can contact his bank and get them to put a block on the account and hopefully they can retrieve the money before the funds clear and he has a chance to withdraw.

It's not banking Fraud so the bank won't see it as that. The OP willingly sent the money. Hopefully the bank will retrieve the money but they're under no obligation.

This is basically a matter between the seller and the buyer, the Gardai might make a report but I can't imagine it's a crime that will be at the top of their to do list.

You only get cover from Direct Debits and Card Payments.

This is where PayPal with all its faults, does come in handy. I usually see it as a warning sign of a vendor won't accepted it, even if I offer to pay the sellers fees.

Yeah, it's because it's so easy to reverse scam a seller and simply claim "What item, I never received an item" and they can't prove it unless the item is tracked.

Some can ask you to send them the money "as a gift" meaning they don't pay fees, nor do you but you don't get purchase protection.

Easier to send money that way but still no comeback.

So went to the guards yesterday and went into the route of prosecuting him for fraud. The guard gave me two options, either don't go court and they try their best to get the money back by contacting the bank etc. Or go to court (take upto a year) He also mentioned the likelyhood of getting your money back isnt that great so I figured atleast if I aint getting my money back I may aswell lose with a fight. Bring that piece of **** to court and even if If its a waste in my end atleast he has to go through all this aswell once they get a hold of him
Also waiting on the bank to get back to me about retracting funds

I doubt it. Hes probably in Wicklow for all I know. Altough when I was on the phone with him id always hear the songs which made it look like he was in a shop. But I doubt a legitimate shop would scam. I just got to play the patience game and get on with my life and let the guards and bank handle the rest.

Why would anyone actually attempt to buy something in such a blindingly risky way? You may as well leave €400 on the street and come back an hour later hoping someone left a phone in its place.

    Dumbstruck.

Considering the naul just about has a shop i doubt there is a phone shop there . At least ive never seen one anyway.

I know, the fact he gave me the imei number made me a bit ease as it assured me its not stolen or blocked. Ah well, lesson well learnt.
