I have an incredibly stubborn paper gasket that wont come off an alloy
    engine casing.
I don't want to use a blade or any other metal scraper.
I've tried soaking it in petrol and using a plastic scraper to no avail.
Anybody got any tips for softening the gasket? Household bleach perhaps
or would that attack the alloy?

You can buy gasket remover from Wurth, its very effective on hardened paper gaskets.
