Have a Slatted house that could approximately hold 100 cattle but is empty. Was wondering if I could put it to use by buying cattle and make a few euro from it ???
I have know silage so would have to buy ,have plenty of wheat and barley small bit of straw . Have know grass all in corn.
Was looking at few lads with feed lots and was thinking they mite be getting €100 per head prefit
Tried to rent it but no interest without silage .

I would think you have missed the bus in regards picking up cattle cheap ,cattle trade has picked up considerably .If your tanks are empty your best bet might be to get lads to draw in slurry and get them to pay for emptying them again on your own land

Would anyone pay for the slurry storage and you could use it yourself again as fertilizer ?

Highly unlikly unless you are near a piggery that is stuck for storage. At best they would deliver it free. Most expect you to pay for delivery. FC most lads are exiting feeding. If you have wheat and barley I be selling it. 50 cattle suitable for finishing will cost in the region of 50-60K. More than likly you would have to buy straw as well. Straw is gone very expensive.

I would either rent the shed or get slurry into the tanks either would be more profitable than finishing 50 cattle and way less risk involved.

As others have said, free slurry is probably your best option. Contact a few planners in your local area/teagasc to find out if there is anybody that needs land for nitrates. It's a small window of opportunity between now and the 15th January or a bit longer depending on your location.

If the seat's wet, sit on yer hat, a cool head is better than a wet ar5e.

If the roof is high, and access is good, perhaps rent out for motor home accommodation?
As long as your insurance allows.

What would you think to do for long term ?

I tried to rent but very little money and no interest.

I already get sludge so my nitrates plan is used there .

If you are using sludge you will be caught for nitrates for any cattle you finish. Yes there will be a few bob made thsi year as price is a little stronger than anticipated but there will be no fortune made. Finishing at present is a zero sums game as the investment involved to turn over a small margin is huge.

Between feed and animal cost to finish 100 animals you could have 130K tied up to make 10K at most. However that would be a good year lots of years you maght make only 4-5K or even lose that amount. It is a load of bollax feedio ng a load of cattle for nothing. If you can find a lad to rent it rent if not leave it empty unless you intend to have grazing ground again

Would it be worth holding back some ground from corn and make a pit of silage for next year to enable you to let the shed with feed, possibly including feeding as part of the eldest to increase value and revenue for yourself.
It would be a form of diversification of income too, rather than relying on the corn alone.

Now, getting paid for the letting can be a problem to be aware of, I know more than one lad who have been caught for a winter feed and shed rent and never got a cent for it.
