New year has come, so it's time to rewind and compare expectations against reality.

Let me be the first one, and very likely the most boring as well: yes, I kept my good old corolla alive, the biggest spend was new cat and a set of vintage alloys.

The very same plan's for 2018, however if underbody's rust will become an NCT fail, I would have no option but to let her go - and obviously it'd be really tough decision.

    Now, your turn. ;)

    Toyota, same as you.

Mine is a 2005 import from the UK. Mechanic warned me last time that I might have a problem with the underside rust as they put so much salt on their roads.
We covered it up as much as possible and got through, but I'm worried if I can do the same again. Will know soon enough.

    Is yours Irish or UK?

Irish, but older (built March 2000) and driven mostly on rural roads, so (I guess) loose chippings significantly contributed to underbody's rust protection damage.

Not a very long list, just got a three year old car in great condition in Nov, Citroen C4 Grand Picasso. Exclusive+ with lounge pack so almost every option, some not even on the later builds! Can live without the options not included, lane departure assist and auto high beam. Newer builds have foot swipe on the motorized tail gate, but it's enough compared to the last car only having to click the fob to open or push a button to close.

Top of the list is simply to get some chrome plastic wheel nut caps from eBay (missing a few at the moment).

I'll be detailing the 18" alloys for the first time, they're in perfect condition, no scrapes (I'm paranoid at every kerb now!) Quite possible at least two new tyres before year end, that'll be a bit pricier than the last car!

Need to get some leather care products and plan to pick up some padded seat protectors for between the car seats and back seats.

Have to rip a few more of the kid's CDs, no CD player now (ancient tech in 2018 I guess), so copy to USB, phone or car's internal Jukebox storage. Also need to investigate updating maps and hooking up phones to car. Get handsfree working, see how WiFi tethering works, Bluetooth options, maybe look at music streaming from phone.

First NCT this year in Nov, probably service around then too, maybe after depending on mileage. Only item that got a heads up from main dealer engineers report is that the rear brake discs are corroded and will need replaced next service. Visually compared to last car (12 yrs old), probably fine for NCT actually, but good to be aware of.

Otherwise, hoping for uneventful motoring in 2018!

2012 Leaf Acenta and 2014 Leaf Tekna. Both bought in 2017. Great cars.

The 2012 heating isn’t working (common problem in the first generation) and I believe it’s an expensive dealer job, so I will take care of it myself. I wouldn’t bother, but it’s essential for demisting the windscreen in this weather.

Fix it and hopefully nothing else breaks throughout the year

Hoping our family car doesn't cause too many problems, can't afford a new car so hoping our 06 will be kind to us this year.

Mechanic friend of mine says that owning a second hand car might be impossible for low income earners. Cars are getting a lot more technical and the costs of repairs in 5-10 years will be astronomical that low income earners prob won't be able to afford them.

Most new cars have monitors to display the cars information and other entertainment systems attached to them, motors that drive handbreaks, the array of sensors etc etc.

Now with self driving cars set to become the norm in the next ten years I fear for the future.

Continue to restore one of the minis. Nearly there. Engine should be fully sorted this month, and then new wheels to go on. That will have it driveable!

Hopefully get my car back this week after getting repaired pay for that :(
Next week is car insurance renewal time having searched most places my best so far will be around 650ish mark.

Plan then is to give it a good cleaning on the inside (rip out seats and do a proper job)
Proper wash and polish sort a few small niggle things (radio knob button is gone on the blink must try source one in a breakers here or the uk)
Take Proper pictures my buddy is good at that and write a proper ad for it.
Try and shift it on down the road and lose a couple of grand.

Hopefully find and buy a cheapish estate laguna mondeo c5 as i need one with the 3 kids getting bigger by the day.

Thats the plan if all that happens ill be happy if not i can dream:pac:

The only plans I have for my E46 are to give it an Inspection II, deal with some rust, refurbish the wheels and give it an interior detail every 6 months. Other than that, I just hope it won't break down or cost me any more money! I won't be surprised if I need to change the clutch (it's quite soft and the biting point is fairly close to the top but it's definitely not slipping even if I try to make it slip) but I'm going to make it last as long as possible. There is the cricket sound some times from the interior but it's been like this for nearly six months and it's not gotten any worse, so unless it gets worse I'm going to wait until Inspection II before sorting it out. While I'm on the topic of sorting things out, I also need to change the bonnet locks but again I'll wait until Inspection II to do that.

My car needed to go to a garage no less than three times in December (power steering pump, followed by a sticky caliper and then an ABS sensor and wheel bearing - although the latter faults were caused by me driving with the sticky caliper for too long - no choice cause I was in the middle of nowhere and there was nowhere safe to pull in), so I'm hoping my bad luck streak is over for a while!

Plan to change my Golf for something bigger.

It's our main car and it struggles when it has to carry the entire family. It's tight in the back seats.

Just not sure what I'll change to yet.

My plans are boring. Keep the e46 and hopefully keep it running reasonably well. Rust is an issue now so hopefully it will pass the NCT.

Awaiting delivery of a new Insignia mid January.

    Boring story for me.

Having considered changing my car for the past month or so I've decided rightly or wrongly to keep my 2010 Mazda 6.

I got it serviced, two new front tyres and a new calliper.

Otherwise in good nick according to the mechanic and thankfully no rust which he was surprised at.

My plan now for 2018 is to get it a proper full wax/polish done professionally as in the past 4 years of my ownership and probably by the previous owner it's been neglected in that regard.

Shod my a6 with 4 new tyres this month. 255 19 35 not gonna spend more than 600 if I can. Change the Accord mid year for something more economical. What I don't know yet.

    Happy new year all,
Well I purchased a Suzuki Vitara last year, but the bugger tyre sensor have been the bain of my life. Hope this year to go back to my beloved Peugeot 3008. Had one for 5 years and bullet proof. The suzuki is fine and I've put up almost 27k Km in 9-10 months so now retirement is approaching time for Peugeot

Reckon I'll donedeal it soon. €2500 ish, I fancy a real banger, like something <€750 there's such entertainment in bangernomics.m it's becoming hard to ignore.

If it doesn't sell, I'll just have to continue keeping it forever.

Ye them tyre sensors can be a real when they act up. The Dad had the same problem with one on his 2011 Ford C-Max. He would be saying low tyre pressure when the tires were grand. He just had to reset it each time it happened.
3008 and it is a classy car in either gen I think.

    Live long and Prosper

    Peace and long life.

Main plans are to get the car serviced in 41 days, get the boot and bonnet resprayed due to cat scratches, buy a extra alloy and tyre for a spare and all going well get it properly detailed. Oh and insurance is due on Valentine’s Day :(

Will most likely be changing to an estate on account of a new, energetic and very messy cocker spaniel pup. He has the back of the A6 in bits and it’s not even been a week.

Would like to change this month and there is a nice Mk2 Octavia scout on DoneDeal at the minute. Chape tax and all that.

Will be picking up something in the UK this month.

So far I've considered Fiesta ST 2.0, Focus 2.0 and a Corsa SRi 1.6 turbo.

The Fiesta is by far the worst on VRT as a 2009 Corsa or Focus is the same as a 2006 Fiesta. The OMSP on the STs are ridiculous.

The Corsa SRi's also come in 5 door and insurance seems fine so im ever so slightly leaning towards that.

Keep the Golf going, that’s about it. It needs a service very soon (300km or so). Would appreciate having a car with lower running costs, but changing makes no sense right now. I still enjoy it (as does my GF).

The Passat got an extra year on life due to unforseen circumstances. Still planning on trading it in, but it has to be done this year under the Dieselgate refund program. I still want an S6 or CTS-V to replace it, but it will depend on my job situation in about 6-8 months.

The wife's SL550 is, unfortunately, going to have to go away later this month. She's pregnant, and the car is not really suited for large-bellied women, or families. Which is a shame, as we both really love that car. Probably going to get replaced by an E-Class, likely a year or two old.

Hopefully get my first year NCB :p

Also sort out a pressure washer so I can snowfoam the car properly :)

Other than that I can't think of anything...

Will be keeping baby cupra for 2018 for sure. I am on pcp, and its to early to consider upgrade, but even then, there is nothing cool in my budget. Seat is not doing new ibiza cupra, so thats gone. :(

    Plan for this year:
Main Car: Sell my leaf and move into a longer range EV (hopefully a model S)
    Others:
'99 406 - NCT due in february. There's a niggly airbag light on which can be fixed by cleaning the seat connectors (known issue). Other than a slight clunking from the rear bushings - common in the sticks - plan is that she passes the NCT and I get another 12 months of reliable clattery motoring.
2002 Golf - currently awaiting NCT retest date. Plan will be to keep this as backup (and use for her indoors)
2003 Alhambra - Once the golf is NCT'd I'll be putting this through and selling her on. Served its purpose (load lugging for house move)
'97 406 - will be getting rid shortly
    '94 corona - ditto

Many idea's/plans for the Civic. Alloys been the main objective this year and sorting out the damn rusted roof.

Too many cars never enough time :(

Avensis: Keep it checkpoint friendly. Test it next month at some stage. Rack up more miles
Z: Get a test on it again. Keeping with the van theme I've the back stripped out and a sheet of checkerplate aluminum to go in to replace the plywood/dog cage. Will make a thread on it soon
C220 DIESEL: maybe, just maybe, have the engine for the damn thing running (note: no mention of having it in the car, just the engine running on a pallet would be nice!)
C220 CDI: Strip it of it's good parts for the above car, use rest as hen house
406: eventually fit windscreen. I have another XUD to assemble with forged rods and mechanical VNT to shove in it someday I'm bored. I already have a K14-2 in it along with my own spec pump (wish I was using it as my daily)
525i: Keep collecting suspension parts and make a bust at it some weekend in the summer, needs piss all after that to be road legal

I am aiming to inherit a Seicento for... Mild renovation ;)

I've other sh*tboxes that need to be stripped and got shut of which I'll do in due time. One man and his consaw/tow chain + tractor to the task :)

I need all the help I can get! :p:o

My plans for the year consist of... taxing and servicing the car. I am ~8months in and usually this is when I would start to get itchy and looking for something new, but I have no intentions of changing any time soon. Really enjoying it.

A few things I plan on doing

    1. Daily car - S3 - New tyres, refurb or powercoat alloys depending on when the council pay for pothole damage. Get a minor scuff repaired

    2. Fun Car - RS4 - Bring back out in spring for a few months. Miss the V8!!!

    3. Project Car - 106 Rallye - Spend a bit of time on fixing it up, hopefully can get the interior re-upholstered and a few trim bits sorted. it could do with a respray to be mint, we'll see how the crypto goes this year :D

    4. Don't buy any more cars....

Looked back on last years thread for once I actually predicted right. Could I do a second year in a row :pac:

Well still have the 2016 Leon TSI now has 29K km on it. Last year all I did was service it once and buy a touch up paint pen for it. Had to get the front windscreen replaced as well due to crack.

This year I got two new front tyres today Eagle F1 Asy 3 Like them a lot so far. Needs to get it serviced in the next month or two then will need another service towards the end of the summer. Possibly another two tyres towards the end of the year. Tax and insure and hopefully thats it. The plan is to keep it for the year well at least thats what my bank balance hopes I do.

My plan is to take the Mk2 Transit camper off to the Uk several times for a week or two at a time over the summer (chasing steam trains) whilst continuing to deal with whatever is next to break on my Capri .
The family Focus is going and it's replacement is due any minute (won't be another Focus although it was really reliable, 70000km with only services and new tyres to pay for.)

My plan is to replace the plastic undertray on my Cmax with a metal one:

    https://www.skid-plate.com/skid-plate-for-ford-c-max-2004-2010

The plastic one took a beating when I had to plow through a large mound of snow in front of my drive, courtesy of the local Herr Pflug.
    Good idea or daft?

Changed the big 7 seater SUV for a Duster (2nd hand,no PCP for me) last month. Saving a fortune in fuel costs and gone down from €710 tax too. It's the wife's vehicle.....she wasn't on for my idea of getting an estate.
As a result it looks like I'll be hanging onto my car for another while. A machine polish is on the cards for it to bring the black shine back up.Mitsubishi reliability means it's mechanically sound so with regular TLC it will see me out for a good while yet.

2004 Audi Sport Tdi. Car is absolutely mint and has been very well maintained in my five years of ownership. Renewal this month and getting quotes of over 1k to insure it.

Im not paying that money out of principle and the car is not worth selling so gonna park her up, will do without a car for the foreseeable future and go back to biking. Seriously considering emigrating, ireland...a banana republic mad.png

I didn't mention it because I'm not planning on doing anything with it, but my V8 S4 is starting to be a problem. She's drinking a quart of oil every 500 miles or so, now, after 125,000, mainly motorway, miles. (Apparently there's also a known problem of the wheels for the timing chain falling off at about this mark). However, she's a V8 with a manual transmission, so there is no intent to get rid of her.

Yep, known to be a problem on them all right.
AFAIK the RS4 is less susceptible to that issue, mine has about 80k on her at the moment, I think.. and now is just being used as a summer car to keep the miles down.

Are you planning to keep RFTs just with a different make like Michelin Primacy 3 or switch to regular tyres, like Michelin Pilot SS & take risk of a puncture?

Spending my last year with the i3, swapping her for a Tesla Model 3 in early 2019.
Depending on how quick they scale production I may see it in Q4 of this year.

Trying to avoid buying a new set of winter tires for the i3. Might switch back to summers early and sell the winter alloys.

Good question ongarite and to be honest I'm not really sure whether to get rid of runflats completely. Had an E61 and changed to regular tyres, made some difference. I think the F10/F11 is set up better to handle runflats and i don't know of anyone that has removed them. I've a few months of the Bridgestone before i decide anyway. How do you find them on the 530d?

At the moment they are poor, rears will spin up when tyres are cold and worse if it's wet.
When they get to around 10-12C, as monitored by the iDrive, they grip better.
Have 6mm left on the current tyres so while before I make up my mind on changing to non-RFT

Yeah mine are new as well so it'll be a while yet before changing. Looking at reviews of the potenza they are rated very poor for grip in damp conditions. Definitely not suited to our climate anyway. Michelin or Goodyear are the way to go. Had Pirelli P Zero on my last car (2013 525d F11) and they were better than the bridgestone but still not great.
