Seeking work in SMEs

I'm just wondering what are the norms associated with looking for work with SMEs as much of the advice out there refers to large and multinational enterprises. I'm very disillusioned about working for larger organisations and really just see my future working for SMEs again, as I have done for most of my career.

My background and education is in supply chain/ procurement/ purchasing which is obviously not industry specific but most of my experience is in the construction industry.

Most of my jobs were found through my personal network but there are few opportunities down that avenue these days. I remember when I last worked in SMEs, people would often just hand in CVs and always wondered if this was effective? I remember trying this years ago and heard absolutely nothing but I was much younger, less skilled and less experienced.

    Any thoughts appreciated.
