Hi there,
There is an issue with role permissions that is being worked on at the moment.
If you are having trouble with access or permissions on regional forums please post here to get access: https://www.boards.ie/discussion/2058365403/you-do-not-have-permission-for-that#latest

An odd one for you.

So, having read the FAQs and the charter, and having read all from the RSA site that I could find, I have a question for the board.

My situation is a strange one. I held a provisional licence in 2007 to 2009. I was due to have my full licence test but was unable to take it due to injury. As time went by I forgot all about driving, and because I lived close to work and anything I needed, never revisited it. Until now, when a change in job means that driving will become essential.

I have since retaken the theory test and will have the learners permit in the coming days.

    My questions are as follows:

    - Will the fact that I held a provisional licence pre 2011 mean that I will be excused the EDT and 6 month waiting period?

    - If not excused the EDT, does the 6 month period between the issuing of learner's permit and taking of full test still apply, considering the above conditions?

    and finally

    - If neither of the above apply, and I have to do the EDT and 6 month period, if I can get all EDT lessons completed in a time shorter than 6 months, is it possible to get a letter from work to ask for a quicker turn around for full testing?

I hope these questions are phrased properly. The Christmas period is taking its toll on my sleep pattern.

    Thanks for your replies.

    1. As far as I recall you will have exceeded the lapsed time which used to be 5 years (not sure if that has changed).

    2. Yes.

    3. Presuming you are referring to a category B test, the 6 months will apply regardless of a letter from your employer. A letter from your employer could still be used to request a test as soon as possible after the 6 month period has elapsed.

    As above...

No, the only difference for someone in your position is that you won't have the reduced points quota as your driver number was issued pre 2014. For everything else, you are a full startover.

Yes, assuming you don't have a full licence in another category (ie motorcycles) or that you don't have a foreign, non-exchangeable full licence.

You will be able to apply for a test immediately but you won't be able to take the test within 6 months. In the past, I was able to book a test and was offered a date within the 7th month of my holding the learner permit. I don't know if you can still do that but it may be worth booking the test straight away as a start.
