Ryanair Christmas Cancellations

Hello all, I was in Stansted yesterday December 27th 2017 with my family. I had checked in, dropped off checked luggage and was waiting at my gate for my flight to Dublin. About 10 minutes after we were due to leave, it was announced on the intercom that the flight was cancelled, due to 'ongoing issues at Stansted airport'. Clearly this was due to snow. Most people seemed to think the snow was not that heavy, but I'm not an expert so I won't comment on that.

The airport was chaos, queues everywhere. It was extremely difficult to recover my checked bag as it was just madness. The queue at the Ryanair airport customer service/reservations was as long as I have ever seen. I tried calling the Ryanair reservations number to no joy. When I finally spoke to someone, I was told all flights gone in next 2 days, so book elsewhere and claim back afterwards.

I booked with aer lingus at an alternative airport.

I understand this issue is likely an 'exceptional circumstance' and hence no compensation will be given. i really only want to cover back my expenses incurred as a result of the extra hassle. So I would assume that I can be reimbursed for the additional costs? Here is Ryanair's cancellation policy:

    https://www.ryanair.com/ie/en/useful-info/help-centre/faq-overview/flight-cancellations#0-4

My query is how I proceed with claiming back all these costs. The policy above gives refund as option A. If you avail of the refund, does that mean you cannot avail of claiming additional reroute expenses in option B? I am nervous that if I get my refund, they will not reimburse the costs incurred in the flight reroute. Obviously the more expensive reroute flight, and the cost of getting to the alternative airport all stacked up.

can anyone tell me if I start by getting a refund, will I shoot myself in the foot? Am I best not to get refund, but just claim the cost difference between my original flight and the second flight back as an expense? This is Ryanair's expense claim form: https://eu261expenseclaim.ryanair.com/
Apologies if this seems excessive, but yesterday set me back £500 in additional, unplanned costs, so I am keen to see what I can do about it.

Many thanks for any help anyone can offer,
    regards
    Proteuspal
