Audi A6 C7 "Do not drive - Steering Defective" error popped up out of the blue today on my A6 (2013) with 82000 miles. Turning off and on the car reset it temporarily but it keeps coming back. No change in steering feel or anything (assistance still there).

Rang 2 Audi garages but neither has heard of it before....

It'll be the end of next week before the garages can take it in to check it out. Anybody come across this before? Hoping its just a sensor issue or something......

I saw that (and similar) earlier but I hope to hell mine doesn't need that!! My last car (Accord) got destroyed with dirty fuel a year ago so I must be one unlucky guy.....I get my cars serviced bang on time, every time. Just replaced the damn timing belt in early Dec so it better not be a blasted rack replacement job on top of that now.

I can't feel any difference to drive or anything but the error keeps coming back.

keep driving it. put a little bit of tape over the warning.

I will keep driving it....I don't have much choice anyway for the moment as Audi can't check it out until the end of next week.

Strange that the assistance seems normal. If it was serious I'd have thought it'd be heavy or something.

When you park it up make sure it can be moved by a recovery truck, Sometimes the whole column locks and won't allow the vehicle to be moved. There is an unofficial workaround for a temporary move but it doesn't always work.

Pull the fuse for the column lock. Passenger side fuse box. Have the ignition on when removing the fuse. It will bring a light on but that's not really a problem at this stage.

So, the error stayed on more or less for 3 days. Occasionally it would disappear but come back on. It's disappeared for the last couple of days.

Brought it into the garage to get it checked out this morning but there's nothing recorded!!

I'm to drop back to the garage if it shows up again and the warning is active.

They don't think it's much as the steering feels perfect and there's nothing recorded in the log (strangely).

Feck....back again and lose power assistance now, even when driving. Not good.

Did you get it sorted?... I have the red warning light coming on intermittently too. What was the fix/cost?

Well...I brought it to my local Honda dealer (where I bought it a couple of years ago) and rather than just assume it was screwed, they 'took it apart' and connected everything back together again. That was around a month ago and I've had no errors since! They thought some of the wires seemed a little bit loose but there was nothing obvious really (the wires were not THAT loose). It was rampant with errors before they did that but not one since.

If this doesn't work, I'll have to source a second hand rack/motor and get them to fit it. So far so good though but If I was to go through Audi I'd say It would be a couple of grand.

I'm not sure if it's really fixed or not yet because it came back after about 2 months before.

Mine was dangerous. The assistance could come and go every few minutes!!
