    What airline?

What would be the point of checking in only to have too queue up anyway for a boarding pass?

Every single airline has online check in and they will give you a boarding pass to print or alternatively you can use your phone.

If it’s Ryanair it’s €15 to reissue a boarding pass and you won’t be able to budge on that

Aer Lingus, I recall (could be wrong) that you can do it on their automated machines

If you can’t print it, both let you save the QR code as a picture on your phone. Works effortlessly

You neither have to check in online or print your own boarding pass with Aer Lingus. If you have a smart phone it's much handier to check in on the app and you can have your boarding pass on the phone.

You can print them off at the self service machines.

Are you checking in bags? Check in at the Airport then, if you are going to have to queue at either the desk or self machines to check in your bags, you might as well get your boarding pass at the same time. No charge for Aer Lingus check in either.

No you can check in at no charge in the airport with Aer Lingus.

What's the point in checking in online? I thought the idea years ago of checking in was to show that you arrived at the airport? Could a system not exist where you book your ticket and then just show proof of ID when you board?

The point of checking in on line means less queuing at the airport, also saves the Airline money.

Checking in, does not mean you have arrived at the airport, just means that you will be taking your place on the plane. Still doesn't stop the plane leaving without you though.

Your boarding card tracks your entire trip. It links your flights. Your bags. Lets the airline know you're in the airport (As opposed to checking in doing that). Ensures you're getting on the correct flight. Shows whether you're entitled to duty free or not. Comes with extra security measures.

Showing your passport at the boarding gate wouldn't cut it.

So people can just go through security and to the departure gate without showing they have booked a flight?

Assuming the flights were booked together they will give you both boarding passes.

You should have the option to print out the boarding passes at home, assuming you have access to a computer and printer.[/quote]

There's a PC with a printer both downstairs by arrivals and also by the Garden Terrace bar upstairs in T1.

It's gonna come down to its this eventually though and it's already being tried in various stages in different airports.

You can check in at the airport and get your boarding pass printed by only having to scan your passport in a machine.

Immigration in some smaller airports is almost entirely a scan of your passport and facial scanning and your through.

You have to enter your passport number when you book a flight for a lot of destinations now anyway. The information is recorded before your bank takes the payment and you can't travel with almost any airline without a valid passport. It would save on having to print boarding passes etc, and could cut down on queues as well.

I was thinking after I posted that when flying out of a lot of airports, Dublin included, you can get to the boarding gate without ever showing your passport. Although I've never had to enter my passport details at booking stage for a flight (that I recall), I do have to enter them to check in.

So you may well be right.

Any idea which airports already have a passport only system in place?

Flew back from Gatwick last night and we scanned our passports to check in and the machine printed out our boarding passes. When we were at security the guy said to me that this was a trial procedure to see how it works out.

If it works out, then you will be able to go straight to security with your passport only and on to your flight. He was saying the biggest problem will be older passengers who get confused with technology.

Oh yeh that's been in Dublin with Aer Lingus for years.

Is there anywhere actually doing no boarding passes yet though?
