I'm starting as an EO in a Limerick city Garda station in a few weeks. I haven't really been told what I'll be doing though. Anybody have experience in this role?

Hi just got a phone call from PAS today offering me Garda. Can you tell me a bit about your role. Do you still get other benefits of civil service (flexitime, term time, etc.)

    Hello
What has your experience of working as an EO in a garda station been like? What are the duties?

The amount of EOs coming into Garda Stations in the past year is unreal. However, COs are working in AGS for the past 50 years and are already doing the majority of the 'better/responsible' work, especially the experienced ones. Its very difficult for EOs, and most members of AGS have no clue of the difference between COs and EOs, all they see is 'civilians' in the office. A lot of EOs in stations do a lot less work than the established COs, which is very unfair on both grades.

I'd love to hear from EOs as well.

Are there HEOs in garda stations?

I worked as a CO in AGS for almost 18 years. I worked in Garda HQ, as well as two very busy Dublin Divisions and a Country Division. There is very much a mentality of "us and them" that in my opinion is getting worse not better. I left for another department 7 months ago and wish I had done it sooner. The work I was going as a CO was very much EO work I now realise but as work was never graded in AGS you could be landed with anything from typing reports to issuing permits for charities to collect to dealing with firearm applications. Your best bet would be to ring whatever station you have been offered and ask to speak with a clerical officer and ask their opinion of said station/District/Division. There are still a lot of Gardaí working in offices although I think Harris appears to be making strides here... finally.

Worked as a TCO in a District HQ 13 years ago. I have great memories,I was treated really well by everyone.I think I they were used to the CO i replaced swanning off to get her hair done in the middle of the day.(This was before garda civilian HR was set up.I was directly employed by the Department of Justice) I just got my head down and got on with the work. We had 2 high profile murders in the district when I was there. Those were tough. I had to type up books of evidence.
I cried on my last day!! Something I have never done before or since. I stuck with the civil service and am a HEO now.
I suppose it depends on the station you are assigned to. Mine was a small rural district. I imagine HQ is far more corporate.
