Burn smell coming from the car

    Hi,

Since a week or two, I am noticing a burn smell outside of my car, Toyota Corolla 2007, after parking. I am not sure whether the smell exists while I am driving. I cant find any trace of oil leakage or any fumes from the car. Today the smell become higher and I could say that the smell is coming from the portion beneath the driver door as the smell is higher over their. The smell is like a burning clutch and I swear I dont over apply cluth during the drive. I don't have any sound knowledge in car mechanisms and the service centers are closed for a week. If some one had any idea, please guide me.

NB: I bought the car last month and the last service done was Jan 2017 and its just crossed 10 k after service and 2 lakh in total

Could be oil spilled inside engine bay that has moved down near exhaust and is being burned off. If it smells like rotten eggs could be catalytic converter. Did you check under the engine that there's no plastic bar or anything stuck underneath being burned off?

No its not like the rotten eggs but almost like a tyre burn smell. I couldn't find any plastic burning

Thank was from the exhaust and I think it was because of the condensation. Any way it's in my list before the service. But this issue is some bothering me as I travel with my infant most of the time

Could be any number of things, something caught in a belt or caliper, or some wiring insulation worn or overheating. Get it checked when u can and if you have to drive any distance in the meantime keep a close eye on your engine temp and oil and coolant levels.

    Have you washed the car?

Grit and dirt from roads will cause a smell when car has been driven and hot.

I wouldn't be so quick to dismiss your previous issue 5 days ago given what you've said in this thread. There could be something very wrong.

It's very hard for us to diagnose anything given what you've said to be honest. You'd really need to open the bonnet and have a good look around with the engine on, and a good sniff to see if you can identify where the smell is coming from.

It could be oil leaking from somewhere, it could be some plastic part that is touching the manifold and starting to burn....

Engine temperature gauge is pretty normal and I didn't notice anything abnormal during a longdrive some days back and surprisingly I didn't smell anything that day.. Have to check the oil and coolant levels tomorrow...

I opened the bonet today immediately after the drive and I didn't get any abnormal smell from the engine other than the normal smell from the engine after a drive. More over, I was not able to find any burning parts as well. I have to confirm the same in day light as well..

I would wash it and I mean jet wash it good.

Lots of sh1t on the roads.

Happened before where literally human waste was flowing across the road and got to end of journey could smell it in the car and by jaysus was it bad outside.

Tyres are something that could be overheating due to low air pressure.

    Have you checked tyre pressure.

Its something should be done weekly

This is the same thing I am thinking. The smell is almost nearer to the tyre and not at all from the engine or bonet

If I remember right, this car was only just bought, strange smoking from the car, strange smell, and the keys don't work in the locks.

Have you any warranty on the car?

Could brake pads be down to the bare metal?

    Nailed it...!!!!!!

But the person from I bought the car is pretty good and I know them personally. So chances of getting cheated is almost nil..

Edit: He assured to ring hin for any thing. And he replaced the car battery even after my purchase

I could remember that at the time I inspected the car for purchase, low oil pressure warning was displayed. But he changed oil and it disappeared

    How can I check that?

If you have alloy wheels on it you may be able to see from the outside looking in with a torch to see how much of the pad is left on them, if not you will need to take the wheel off to inspect, will look something like this...

If it's only coming from the drivers side it could be a sticking pad. After a decent drive touch the wheels, with the back of your hand, to see if any are hotter than the rest.

Maybe way off here but could it be rats? Living in a rural area they sometimes wander around the engine bay, I guess it's a handy heat source for them. Anyhow they leave 'poos' (being polite) here and there and these can give off a fairly obnoxious burning smell. Only really noticeable when the car slows down or stops.....

This. Sticky brake caliper in any wheel may cause the smell due to heat produced with faulty caliper. In my case, I could feel the heat from wheel without touching the alloys.

Brakes and clutch would be the main suspects.

In case anyone is wondering a Lakh is 100,000

Thinking the same based on the smell... The weird thing is I am getting this irregularly. Today I did a good drive for the test and their was no smell. The front 2 brake pads looks worned at first look. Have to check and compare with others

    Most likely cause!

How much would be the cost to fix it?

I did the service today. Everything is in perfect shape and the smell was due to the dirt/damp particles. Feeling relaxed.. Thank you very much for the help
