Sharps are generally needles. I’m not a gym goer so I’ll leave it up to you to deduce why someone would be using needles at a gym.

    I'm shocked and appalled.

Very surprised that a gym would be happy with members injecting steroids on the premises

Diabetic patrons? Plenty of glucose and sugar in supplements. Obviously not the totality of the issue but there are more reasons than the nefarious.

It has been over 10 years since I last went to a gym, would this be a common practice?

Who said they were happy? The sign says not to put sharps in the bin - to dispose of them properly.

Maybe the gym's cleaners had a couple of close encounters of the sharp kind and put up a notice to prevent it happening again.

Bigger problem for the gym if their cleaners had been pricked by someone's needle

No, definitely not. BrandNewMedium might have a point about diabetic members, but you would also presume that diabetics wouldn’t be careless with needles as they are so used to using them

Well seeing as the sign says the staff will assist in disposing of the needles, rather than the sign saying not to dispose of them in the gym at all speaks for itself

    Diabetics rarely use syringes anymore.

It's safer for the gym. If the reality is that people are injecting there then they can be proactive and let staff dispose of them in a proper sharps container as would be used in any facility where sharps are used.

Legally, its probably safer for the gym to go down this route
