I’m 17. Today i was in Penney’s and I peeled the barcode off a eyeliner pencil that was €4 and put it up my sleeve. I know it was stupid and as I was leaving I got grabbed by the security guards and told to come with them , I only realized what I did when I got caught. I got brought upstairs and they took my name address etc and then me and other girls that had took stuff were taken in a police car and brought to the station, where they took my details again in a big booklet and they didn’t even question me. They then put me in a cell and I had to wait till my dad came and collected me. Obviously I’m mortified but they said they’d be in touch with a JLO officer and I’m just wondering how this could effect me ? I’m under 18, will this stop me from getting into college, going to America etc. and how often will this JLO officer visit ?

Own up to it and be honest.

No it won't affect you for them things unless you are convicted but then after 18 you would be clear.

Seriously what were you thinking at the time??

You have learnt probably one of the best lessons you ever will.

Listen to the voice saying don't do it.

Sounds like you're a first time offender so they'll have nothing on file with you. Warning is the general procedure.

Worst case scenario you'll have your passport blocked and you won't be allowed travel till over 18 but that's very very unlikely.

A potential conviction would also be wiped after turning 18 as other poster said which wasn't the case up until a few years ago.

As one poster said already: this is an important lesson in your young life. And not to sound judgmental - it's a minor crime and I would hate to see it ruin your life - but I do hope it has scared the stupid out of you.

I'm pretty sure as it is your first offence and your underage you'll get a formal warning without a permanent record.

As far as I'm aware, it's not true that if a 17 year old is convicted of a crime, it'll be wiped on their 18 birthday. If that was the case, there would be no point going to the effort and expense of convicting them in the first place. In many cases it mightn't even get to court until after their 18 birthday.

OP, having your record cleared after your 18th birthday depends on a few factors. It's not just automatic. I'm sure your parents are looking in to what is the next step. They will probably need to see a solicitor and get some advice.

Penneys have a policy of prosecuting. i spent 7 years working overlooking the Princes Street exit and they had pretty much a permanent Garda presence.

you mention other girls? were they friends?

the conviction can be spent after you turn 18 but only after certain circumstances. it's 3 years after first convicted and still has to be disclosed going internationally.

Don't worry about it. You won't end up with a conviction past 18 for stealing a €4 eye liner. I'd be surprised if it even ends of going to court.

I think we're being trolled. How could you not know stealing was wrong at 17?

I think it's to do with being opportunistic the seriousness only kicked after being apprehended not that it wasn't known stealing was wrong.

No they weren’t friends they were both other girls who were also caught , one was over 18 and one was under 18 too, me and the under 18 year old got released once collected but the over 18 year old got questioned etc
