Shift car into neutral for a moment. Let clutch up.
    Wait a moment
    Then clutch down- into reverse.

It is more likely a technique thing rather than a fault.

Thanks Yes I've tried that the only way it seems to work sometimes is put it into first gear and then reverse sometimes it work more it don't now I just turn off the car and put into reverse it goes in like butter until I find another way around it

I'd suspect that the clutch isn't releasing fully.

I’d say so too.... 97 polo... would that have a clutch cable??.. if so you might be able to adjust it a little.

Yes it has a clutch cable I would be thinking how come the other gears aren't grinding only reverse

Well first and reverse are the only gears you’ll be selecting from stoppedposition. Reverse doesn’t have a synchromesh so it will be the least tolerant of a semi disengaging clutch.
Basically if your hearing grinding from standstill then the input shaft to your gearbox is spinning with a bit of force...and that’s because clutch isn’t engaging fully.

Does the clutch 'bite' near the floor in the other gears ?
If its a cable clutch , as said , you may be able to adjust it , though a lot of cars had automatic adjustment which didn't always work as well as it should ; as the cqble stretches in use there will come a point when the auto system can't take up the slack and reverse is usually the first gear to show effects.

must have been too much free play in movement on pedal if checking with finger movement with dropping pedal before resistance or bulk head/ pedal cluster collapsing as clutch pedal will look lower.

Could be the pedal box issue?
