Politics degree work placement ideas

I am currently a second year politics student in Maynooth University and we've been told that we have to find a work placement for 30 hours next semester, preferably during the Fridays of February. We've been told we need to have a "mentor" with us that would explain the tasks at hand and why they're done. We were recommended going to a local TD, trade union, NGO, or a political movement. Has anyone here any experience of doing a work placement for a politics degree and explain where they went, what they did or how they got the placement?
