Chaps, I’ve had a few e39s over the years but need to trade in my 2003 530d msport as the tax and bills for keeping her on the road are killing me. I’m looking at making a change for something more economical but still comfortable for my 100mile round trip to work 5daysaweek.
Any advice on something that has a good mpg that’s post 2009/10? Looking getting something sooner rather than later as the tax is up on the e39 at the end of this month and that’s another 1400€ + that I could put off something new.
    Appreciate any advice

Yeah I was thinking that’s what I’ll most probably end up doing, but I’m still looking for advice on what to switch to ðŸ‘

Your options are very limited if your looking for something in a premium brand post 2009/2010 for sub 10k. You might have to go to the UK and look at something like a Volvo S80 2.0d.

Would a late e60 not be the obvious thing to do??

Loads and loads of them under budget and m sport too

Economy wise how is the mpg on them as with the miles I’m covering I’m looking to reduce the cost of running it aswell... I might be looking for something that doesn’t exist mind. Although there are a few Volvo S60s over the border that are mentioning mid 50s mpg with low emissions. Ain’t got a clue what they are like all the same

That's been remapped if they're quoting that 208bhp.
The e60's was 163hp with the M47 engine and later versions with the N47 version were 177hp.
Also need to ensure the E60's with the N47 engine have had the timing chain done.
The 2l litre bmw's are very good mpg wise.
Hell I boot around in my 3 litre and still get 40mpg :D

Here's one with a 2 year warranty..its a 08 so I'm wondering how the hell can they offer 2 year warranty on it.
BMW premium cards must have less than 100K miles and also be not more than 6 years old.
Its from Colm Quinn who are BMW dealers.

The ones in 2009/2010 would be more preferable as they came with the nav pack as the F10 was due to be launched in 2010 so probably best to get one around those years.

Here's one that's selling privately but has sat nav and has had the timing chain done with receipts to prove it.

They can afford to give a 2 year warranty because they are asking 10k for a 5 Series that's 10 years old in 2 weeks time.

Something like that would be a nice upgrade.
    390 tax
    2.1 diesel

100 mile predictable round trip everyday is perfect EV territory, there's potential for 5k plus savings on running costs per annum . That's a lot of gross income .

are EV electric vehicles? I’ve nwver really considered it to be honest ... surely electric saloons if there are any would cost a fortune initially ?

    Hybrid
    Luxurious
    Exclusive
    Economical for what it is

That's not maybe the best choice but I'd look for a Lexus Hybrid

Thanks for the reply so far chaps. Can I get some feedback on this car below... major jump out things I may have missed or I should look for? I will probably go and have a drive/look at it tomorrow... Im hoping I should get around 2-2.5k for my e39 sport touring (probably not) but either way I should get the price down south of 10k... are the miles too high or are they about right for this age of car etc...

Common suggestion for mercs is going for automatic gearbox as they are not much fun with manual gearbox.

I drove this particular model with manual gearbox and it was fine(and economical) but to me diesel + auto box is a good combination in those cars.

Cheers, economical is where my head is at right now tbh. I have driven the auto in my e39 and Ive always missed the actual 'driving' if that makes sense? any other points of note... re: chain etc considering the car is proxy 100k on the clock

Doubt you'll be saving anything for the first few years when you factor in loan interest and depreciation ...

Might make sense to put yours up now and see what offers you actually get. I was in for a shock when I sold my last BMW for the current one. Ie how little I got...

Yeah that’s a factor I’m considering, bench hoping to get it traded as part of any purchase

I bought a used car from dealer last week, didnt even ask what he would give me on my bm as a trade, they will give you nothing for it...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 51,360 ✭✭✭✭bazz26

Most dealers don't want trade-ins of that age because there is no money in it for them, just hassle moving them on.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,337 ✭✭✭positivenote

this could be a viable alternative... any opinions?

That Honda is a fantastic car. I'd quite happily drive a thousand miles a week in that.

I love my BMWs but that Merc looks a LOT better than the E60's that have been posted here.

OP, the e39 530d is a reasonably easy car to run these days - what are the killer bills? My manual e39 530d did incredible mpg also, so doubt you're going to see much in the way of fuel savings by changing.

If you're happy with the car, I'd consider keeping it - any savings on tax/insurance will be offset by depreciation.

However, if you want a change, then I'd consider an early facelift e60 520d 2007 - M47 is far more reliable than the N47, they're much cheaper to buy than the 08 models and only €400/year extra to tax.

Thanks for the advice. Big prob for me is the tax and my own insurance. north of €1400 tax and €2000+ insurance is meaning im paying3500 p/a just to sit in the car let alone drive it... the insurace is due to an open claim but this us the reason I’m looking at a lower tax bracket to save me a few bob

HAVe you priced up alternative cars to see if there are any insurance savings?

Sorry to hear about the insurance issue, you might not save much on insurance with another car so the points still stand - spending €10k just to save €1k/year on tax doesn't seem to make sense to me.
