Are they giving a premium above the regular bank holiday payment? Can you request it off?

    Why corporate greed?

I don't know the company but could it be that they must have people on site?

To answer your question, my wife works in healthcare sector, was due to work both Christmas and St. Stephens day, managed to get Christmas day off, only just.

    I work in media.

Have had to do my fair share of Christmas Eves, Days, Stephens Days, New Years Eves and New Years Day in the past. Getting most of them off this year but had to schedule my team which was painful.

I get it. No one wants to work these days. But at the same time, the public isn’t willing to take that drop in production.

I remember years ago working in a small supermarket that was one of the few opened on the 26th. We didn’t have any fresh bread and because there was obviously none from the 25th, the bread rack was completely empty. The abuse I took that day was horrendous. People complaining that there was no fresh bread. Nowadays I see fresh bread in stores on public holidays, which means someone is obviously working them to get them out.

It’s a sign of the times OP.

Didn't you agree to the terms and conditions, including the shift pattern when you accepted the job?

Why? It was a perfectly reasonable question!

Same here. We're on a race to the bottom in terms of how much we can extract from our fellow humans in terms of 'work' and 'productivity' and amazes me how many cheerleaders there is for this.

I remember working Christmas Day in Intel because of process requirements they could not switch off certain machines or allow fluctuations in temperatures etc on certain processes so they needed people in at all times day and night 7 days a week. I think we got double time and a day off in lieu so very well compensated. The singles without small children were more than willing to do it. This and New years day were known as "hot shifts" and you had to arrange your own replacements if they fell on your shift and you wanted them off. Most people had to arrange to be available to come in at short notice if their replacement did not show up. The replacement would face the same disciplinary sanctions as if missing a day of his own shift.

My wife is a nurse and so has had to work several Christmas days in very challenging conditions because Christmas is a busy time in hospitals.

I'm a wife, mother, housewife and in the hospitality business, I work 7 days a week for the past 34 years, no time for sick leave and bank holiday weekends are just regular weekends for me...but I don't say anything lol

It's simple, if you don't like the job and the conditions attached, get one where you do.

I worked shift for many years, including Christmas day, I didn't like it, so I changed.

I've worked Christmas day and night. This year I'm off. But since I work in a 24/7 factory it's part of the shift. If you want Christmas off work in an industry that closes for Christmas if you choose a career in a 24/7 industry don't complain about it.

Sure don't worry because in a few years we'll all be replaced by robots and then we can enjoy doing nothing, with no income.

I'm not working Christmas, in fact off for about a week before and just over a week after. I was expressing empathy for those that do though, especially when its something not necessary. Nurses, doctors etc I get. Fresh bread, not so much.

I'm off now until Jan 2nd or something like that.

Christmas day is a bore so I wouldn't mind if I had the excuse of work not to partake in the event.

I think that depends what it is.
Also you can't always give in to unreasonable people.

Why did you work a job for many years that you didn't like? Seems like a strange think to do.

I had no issue working Christmas day until I had my first child. It all changed then.
It's very important to them. I am nearing fifty and I still remember all the Christmas days from my childhood. I'd imagine a child would remember a parent being missing on the day so I'm making sure that never happens to mine.

I work shift and have worked a few christmas days and the days either side of it, one of them on a job in asia so no christmas at all:(

I get good time off generally though.

I agreed to it when I took the job, and there are far worse things out there.

Most offshore oil/gas rigs have to be manned 24/7/365, I won't be working but know plenty that work either Xmas or New years or both.
