The Christmas & New Years 2017 Television Selection Box Thread

    Snow is falling,

    all around me,

    Children playing - having fun

    It's the season,

    love and understanding,

    Merry Christmas - everyone!

    Hello!

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to one and all!

What's going on here? - well, it's an experimental general thread for Christmas Television.

Not unlike the Summer threads that fill the gaps when the Late Late Show and similar programmes aren't on. Only at Christmas.

Feel free to let us know about anything decent looking you have circled in your TV Guide, or if you're watching something but you can't be bothered opening a thread about it.

Or have a moan about how the schedules are messed up. Or if you see a classic film on. That sort of thing.

    Sure why not?

C4 tend to show the omen around new years, which I usually watch. Will watch willy wonka too, for the 100th time, or wizard of oz, there plenty of ones I have never watched though, not in full anyway e.g. its a wonderful life

Just seen that TG4 are showing Rocky Ros Muc on Christmas day, a documentary about Sean Mannion, a Galway boxer who went to Boston to fight, heard the fella who made it talking to Second Captains a few weeks ago, sounds like an interesting show.

Do you mean highlighter pen for the RTE guide?

I normally just highlight Indiana Jones, Fr Ted, Hitchcock movies and The Blues Brothers.

My favourite night of the year is when they show Blues Brothers at about 1 am, and me and the crate of Guiness & box of Tayto gets to enjoying ourselves when everyone else goes to bed.

Bizarrely C4 show Home Alone at the end of Jan, maybe last showing & ironically on the same day your CC bill comes in to let you know how much you enjoyed/squandered christmas :P

Oh yeah, It's a Wonderful Life is usually on TV3/ch4,
Gone With The Wind was on RTE 1 last year at 7am, afaik finished @4pm with ads :P have seen it a few times.

Never seen Love Actually  & usually the Back to the Future films normally on RTE, but these two have now found a home on Netflix since Thurs!

I heard the producer on local radio talking about it, it went into cinemas here afaik Oct, but looking forward to it.

I'd be murdered if i highlighted someone else's RTE Guide, anyway i can't knit, as it's full of patterns:p

I usually get the one's that's free in papers & they have listings after the new year, & a good time to catch up with shows over the year & the old classics mentioned above, inc Elf, Scrooged, & alternatives Casablanca, Great Escape etc :D

I saw that a couple of weeks ago and will be watching it again on Christmas Day, it's such a brilliant documentary. Boxing is the main focus obviously but it also goes into emigration and the Irish community in Boston, among other things. Seán Mannion has a fascinating story to tell so hopefully plenty of people will watch it!

Sticking with TG4 on Christmas Day, at 5.25pm there's an animated film adaptation of An Béal Bocht, it's about half an hour long and very funny.

It's a wonderful life is an easy one to find as generally a few stations show it Christmas Day.

But if anybody sees Jingle All The Way being broadcast over Christmas give us a head up. A very guilty pleasure of mine.

Channel 4 at 3:05pm on Today.

RTE Two at 1:05pm on Sunday 24th December.

    Film4 at 3pm on Sunday 24th December & at 11am on Thursday 28th December.

    Brilliant.

I got todays sunday world, it is 2.50 and said it had 2 weeks but only goes up to 30th dec which is stupid leaving off new years eve.

I got mulitple copies since it has a 10euro off 50 for dunnes, which can be used in tesco. So it pays for itself.

A reminder that ‘Die Hard’ is on Channel 4 tonight at 10pm. :)

Last week in my workplace, a young woman started a fierce argument with our team - she thinks ‘Die Hard’ isn’t a Christmas film.

She has now been relocated to the filing department...in the basement. I didn’t even know we had a basement.

TV3 Christmas ad looks like a whole lot of repeats, so nothing new there

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

BBC1 have an early Christmas daytime treat with Raiders of The Lost Ark this afternoon at 1.45pm

Indy and the Temple of Doom (tomorrow) and The Last Crusade (Friday) follow at the same time.

Maybe they should have kept them back until more people are at home, but it's
a big step up from your average BBC1 daytime afternoon fare.

    Good Lord.

Are they showing them next week too, then?

I couldn't be having that without the turkey sambos, Skid. I'd be all over the gaf.

The RTE1 scheduling crew agree and they are showing them in a decent turkey sambo slot

    Raiders 3.40pm Stephens Day
    Temple of Doom 3.40pm 27th
    Crusade 3.35pm 28th
    Crystal Skull 3.30pm 29th

Gremlins is only on TCM that I can see, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day

National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989) Sat 23rd TV3 9pm then also on 3e 27th and New Years Day

I might be in a minority, but I am very pleased to see BBC4 and RTE1 both showing Fairytale of New York Docs this week.

Hopefully the other channels will get on board next year.

Did you see the BBC doc? I've recorded it, might watch it right after this for maximum Xmasness.

Shane off the smokes, I'd expect the stock markets to react in the morning.

I did, AD, I thoroughly enjoyed it.

(It's repeated on BBC4 tonight at 1.40am, for anyone who missed it, or its on Youtube)

This one is a bit more focussed on Shane, the other one was more about the song. Both approaches are alright by me.

I saw a Johnny Cash Christmas Special on Sky Arts yesterday that had Roy Orbison and Jerry Lee Lewis ...

... but that looks underwhelming when I see Nathan Carter has his brother on his Christmas Show.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

I wonder if this started out as a Shane MacGowan Doc and someone along the line they decided it would work better as a Fairytale of New York story?

Lethal Wep 3 is better than I remember.

Has anyone bothered watching the series? I haven't because I fear change.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

ITV4 does show a lot of decent classic films, but if you are taping them on Virgin Media you have to remember that they are often split in two parts, with Showbiz Newz in the middle - so you have to remember to tape all three parts to make a watchable recording.

And I'm too old for that ****.

Not quite 20 years old, but the BBC show was first broadcast in 2005

Cool Runnings just started on BBC1

The lads had an unfortunate collision in the Jamaica 100 metres trials and so they won't be going to the Olympics.

Very sad so far, surely that's their life long dream of competing in the Olympics over?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 21,444 ✭✭✭✭Skid X

Now they have a plan to enter the Winter Olympics in the Bobsleigh ... A Jamaican Bobsleigh team? :D That's unlikely.
