I remember one year being in my gym at 2pm on Christmas Eve. The receptionist came on the intercom and said "right, it's Christmas, it's time to stop exercising and enjoy yourself".

As much as I love working out, last year I prided myself on walking less than 1000 steps on Christmas day. Take a day off. You're worth it.

That displays a level of historic stupidly. As a Mediterranean sourced religion Christianity both borrowed and contributed to many customs, which Christmas evolved to be unique festival to that faith over the centuries. So perhaps you might try exceeding another muscle.

I have no family so going to the gym on Christmas day is a way of killing some time or I'll just go mad looking at four walls

That is so sad, have you no one at all to spend a few hours with?

Believe it or not 1 or 2 rest days a week increases chances of muscle growth

I'm sure a couple do lock ins. Give the door a light knock on the day.

Would you not just go for a run or swim? No gym involved.

I love an oul Christmas Morning workout... I particularly like the smug feeling I get when I post about it on Instagram

Raw Sandyford was open last Christmas day anyhoo and Ironhouse gym near the Green Isle hotel in Clondalkin is always open from (I think) 9am til noon and usually you pay a fiver that goes to charity.

Historic stupidity??? How so dear sir?
My grey matter has always been in good shape thanks, it's the other bits that needed work.

Yes, as you point out the pagan winter festival (predates Christianity a little) was "contributed" to by the Christian faith and evolved into Christmas as we know it (despite the fact that late spring seems likely for date range for the birth of Christ; if you believe he existed.

Anywhoo, each to their own but Christmas is a great time to train.

Jesus didn't even lift so Christianity is of no relevance.

There's a lot of people around Dublin for whom Christmas (and indeed the general festive season) is a burden and anything that would scream of normality would be welcomed. That can be a multitude of different reasons. Having a great celebration among family and friends is a privilege of sorts, people should never automatically assume others have the same experience.

Anyway, hopefully you'll find somewhere within shooting distance or be happy with a run or a swim.

Not sure, did a pretty impressive Farmer's walk near the end.

And there's also the fact that maybe the OP just likes working out....enjoys it even....so why not work out on Christmas Day?

I have nothing to do on Christmas or no where to go so going to a gym, doing a workout and chatting to one or two people seems better option.

I didn't set up this thread to spark an argument with anyone.

    Thanks for the replies/suggestions.

Because in order to work out in the gym on Christmas Day, the gym has to be open, and one or more people would then have to work for the day when they would otherwise get to spend it with their friends/family or by themselves or whatever they choose.
I totally sympathise with the OP's position but am firmly in favour in as few businesses and services being open as possible, as it means fewer people then have to go to work. Other than the bare minimum of public service workers such as Guards, Medical Personel & Fire Service I really don't think its necessary for anywhere else to open.
I would really hate to see this country go the way of the US where its just like a normal day where everything is open.

The walk/run are great ideas, but if you are anywhere near the coast you should do a swim. There will be lots of other people and a great atmosphere, it would be a lovely thing to do and you'd also get in some exercise.
There is also a charity near me that provides dinner to the elderly and some of the homeless, I'm not sure if there is anything similar near you but any help is greatly appreciated in serving the dinners, if you were looking to pass an hour or two. You should see if there is anything like that in your area.

Best of luck OP, hope you find something enjoyable to do for the day. I know how hard it can be.

Try a few hotels, chances are with having smimming pool open for guests they would have folks operating the gym on the day too. Might be the best bet and just pay a daily rate.

I train every Christmas day - have never been particularly religious and I spend time with my family quite a lot so its just another day really but always found the meal more enjoyable after some morning lifting. The training also lets me see loads of my friends who I otherwise wouldn't.

Whoever opens the gym (where I am, and in most of the others that I know of that Open for a few hours) always volunteers to do so - they do it because they want to be part of what is a really fun day for all involved, that can be hard for some people to understand I guess. There is also a quite a few of the gym members who do not celebrate Christmas at all and are always appreciative of the lack of disruption to their training routine.

So, my advice would be to do whatever you like Christmas day. If that's sitting in with family then great, do that. Walk in the park? Superb. But in the spirit of your own chosen religion maybe don't be so judgemental and let the OP do whatever they want to do.. since ya know, it has zero bearing on your life whatsoever

Not true. He actually invented crossfit which is where the name comes from.

If he didn't lift why does he always look so six packy and ripped when he's up on the cross?

Ah yes the if you don't do the best possible thing for mankind then you're wasting your time post.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,902 ✭✭✭✭ted1

1/4 was helping mankind the rest was about doing something you wouldn’t normally do. ( other than charity runs there’s no other on Christmas Day)

Christmas can be a lonely time for many people helping the less well off can help defeat the loneliness.

But glad you focused on the 25% and ignored the other 75%

I won’t bother to ask your views on Irish water or BREXIT
