Replacing radiator handles

Ok I have oil heating with a boiler.
A lot of the radiators in our house don't have any handles.
    I don't really know why.
They're old type radiators from the 80s probably older and in order to turn most of them on and off I have to use a pliers on the nut to turn them clockwise or anti clockwise.
Would it be difficult to put handles on these type of radiator nuts?
They just have a nut, no screw hole, it's a closed nut.
Would I have to replace the valve because I don't know how I'd put a handle on them that would grab onto the nut?
I know nothing about radiators unfortunately.
If I'd have to replace a valve I wouldn't be too confident about doing it.
It could be a spewing disaster.
