Car tax on old car when buying new

    Hi,

I'm picking up a new car in first couple of days in Jan. Current car's tax runs out on 31st Dec. Dealer is saying there's a "grace period" and I'd be fine not taxing current but I haven't seen anything on anywhere confirming that.

I'm guessing the legal requirement is to tax it for 3 months even if only being driven to collect new car?

    Thanks

TBH I wouldn't bother taxing the car, you would want to be extremely unlucky to get in trouble for this.

There's no such grace period (I'm guessing the dealer is referring to the fact that you'd have up to the end of January to tax the car without incurring arrears) but if it was me and I had a confirmed delivery date within the first week of January, I know what I'd be doing.

    Or not doing, really.
