Question about inheritance tax.

My mum died back in 2005, I was 13.

I know that I was under the threshold to pay inheritance tax that year, but I am assuming that before the will goes through probate a return would need to be made to revenue by the executor/trustee of the will?

Also, is inheritance tax payable from the date the person dies or is it payable on the day you inherit - for example, I inherited everything legally at 21. Would inheritance tax have been paid when I was 13? I do have something from the probate office here and on the back it says "deferring inheritance tax".

I know it's probably one big panic over nothing but I'm not in a position to ask the executor of the will. Any advice would be great.
