FTTH - wifi dropping every morning at approx 8 AM ?

    Weird one.

The last 3 mornings the internet connection has played up at approx 8 AM.

Get an authentication error when connecting over Wifi to the Eir router and a "cannot get IP address" DHCP error from my own router.

    Anyone else seeing this ?

    The router's in the attic.
Had been rock solid before this, hadn't rebooted it in over a month I'd say.
No timers in use on anything electrical in the house.
About 3 devices happily connected over Wifi at the time.
Using the new 9.9.9.9 DNS but that shouldn't be relevant

The only thing from around the time in the log is below (this is from just after we noticed the drop so may not be relevant). Seems to be a daily procedure whatever it is.

The 86.43.56.195 is an Eir IP address

Most of thats the CPE Management gateway getting in touch over TR069(Pinhole Management).
2017-12-10 08:00:33	System	Notice	WAN connection GE WAN-1:IPv6 connected.

    That says you reconnected.

It should stay up unless theres an issue. Are you using PPPoE?

It's FTTH - haven't really had any drops since the big storm

    D'oh. Sunday brain on me.

Assuming its not the F2000 acting up, maybe try and watch the ONT at that time. The lights will indicate if there's a link loss.

    Good shout.

It's a bit suspicious that it comes back immediately when I turn off everything (router and ONT) and only when I reboot everything.
So I thinking it's not the link.

Could the cold be affecting it?
There's no condensation or anything up there but it is cold.

    Oops
    F2000 manual states

    Environmental Specifications
     Ambient temperature for operation: 0°C to 40°C (32°F to 104°F)

Still, doubt it's 0C in the attic, I'm not THAT well insulated!

This is what's showing after the connection goes on terms of lights

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 36,170 ✭✭✭✭ED E

    POWER: On
    PON: On
    LOS: Off
    LAN: On

    Perfect.

If it were me I'd drop the F2000 for a bit and let the 2nd unit (whatever it is) handle things to see if theres any change.

OP I don't suppose you or maybe your neighbor put up their Christmas tree in the last 3-4 days?

Well... I was wondering about that myself.
Yes, I did put up some old lights downstairs.
You reckon they might be affecting it?
I have heard of lights interfering with homeplugs alright.

Going every day or so no.
Rang tech support who dialled in and turned off ipv6. I was pretty sure I had turned that off already.

Anyways he suspects it's the F2000 but didn't mention replacing it yet

Not really.. The time it goes varies.
Is there anything (cheapish) that I shoud throw between the socket and the F2000 to tile out spikes and that?

My WiFi is wiped out every evening at around 6pm and we were blaming the routers, and various ISPs. It turned out that it's an elderly neighbour using an old analogue TV sender to transit signals from his Sky box to his bedroom.

It uses analogue signals over a 2.4GHz (Wi-Fi spectrum) link and it basically wipes out a whole raft of Wi-Fi channels. The router starts seeing it as noise and can't get anything past it and the signals drop.

Talked to him and he said he'd change it but just kept using it.

In the end I've had to move everything to 5GHz and wired connections.

    Tinfoil.

    Edit: Im being serious.

I worked DSL Tech support for a few years as a Fault Specialist. Around Christmas we got a notifications of some dodgy christmas lights causing DSL dropouts. Basically, they were generating a radio signal which was the inverse of the DSL signal which results in no connection. If someone is turning on their christmas tree at around 8am it could be killing your connection.

    Willing to try anything.
    Where do I put it?

I wouldnt, I'd move the lights. You wont be able to protect the entire drop.

Don't think it's thee lights as we don't turn them off. It goes overnight these days.

If I has the nous I'd replace the F2000.
Horrendous what Eir are making their customers through (all though the BT Hub from a few years back was supposed to be chronic too)

Really takes the gloss off fibre

Wait, this is FTTH, I keep forgetting. Your fault this time denartha. What you're suggesting is impossible here.

The AC->DC transformer would kill the majority of RFI in the PSU so nothing is reaching the F2000.

Again, try another device if you can. If it persists, it may be the aggregator on the far end.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,963 ✭✭✭long_b

    Replacement router on the way.
Hopefully this will last for a while longer than the rest.

The tech on the phone (besides bemoaning boardies hitching about the F2000) vaguely recommended buying a replacement router in Currys.

Think a definite post on the necessary settings to get FTTH and Eir TV working on one decent compatible router would be very popular.

Hooked up a new router yesterday.
This morning the 5GHz band had disappeared and the 2.4GHz band wouldn't let me connect with an authentication error.
    Hard-wired clients lost connectivity too.

Is there a tool or utility that I can download to spot exactly when the issue comes up?

Is this aggregator on a pole or at the exchange?

At the exchange, behind the OLT (Big version of your ONT, the white huawei box).

The best diagnostic information should come from the routers logs itself.

Had a look in the logs this morning. Nothing showing. Maybe I can increase the logging level.
Will post the log if/when it happens again.
