Looking something small and reliable, she had a polo but was awful hard to get emissions right for nct which I’ve been told is typical enough, its dead now so something new needed.. She wants something a bit bigger than Micra/Yaris

    Here's a Corsa & Fiesta.
I’d like to hear opinions on typical problems to look for, nct hotpoints etc.

Fiesta all day long over a Corsa, those Corsas are not great cars and the timing chains give alot of bother in them. Both cars are overpriced given their age, buying nearly 12/13 year old cars from dealers very rarely makes sense as you're not going to get much in the way of warranty from dealers on cars of that age.

I'd have a look at the Renault Clio too, they are good little car and much better than a Corsa.

    For example:

Worth adding that the Clio is also a more modern design than both that Corsa and Fiesta. They only came out in 2006 whereas the Corsa was launched back in 2000 and the Fiesta 2002. In saying that my sister has a 2008 Fiesta for the last 6 or 7 years and the only thing that failed on it was the clutch master cylinder which is a common problem on Fords of that era.

    Thanks.
She likes the looks of the fiesta so it might be worth driving a few. Clio is a wee bit low.

Honda Jazz is worth a look at so if she likes a little higher seating position.

just bought a Hyundai i/10 for the mother today, brand new, got 2500 for her old one, bought an auto, some car for the price, she's 80 so it needed to be small and easy to park, she loves it.

For what it's worth, our ma, who's in her mid 80's, adores her 2008 Suzuki Swift automatic.
Bought new, it's been utterly reliable and has always passed the NCT with flying colours.
It had its very first replacement part fitted just the other day, a rear brake cylinder which had become 'sticky'.
We have no idea how much petrol it uses, and don't particularly care. :D
We take it for a spin to blow out the cobwebs now and again, and fill off the tank at the same time. She NEVER buys petrol herself

The only 'downside' is the €514/annum Motor Tax, but we consider that to be a small price to pay to keep her mobile and independent.

    Clio is a brilliant car

The jazz is probably the best car mentioned here followed by the fiesta. Id run from a corsa tbh while the clio is an ok car but just ok.

Had a look at a Fiesta today and she loved it. Unfortunately while bodywork was nice etc there was a trace of cream under the oil cap so we left it be.

That might not be an issue. Lots of cars that do short journeys suffer from mayo on the oil cap which is usually caused by condensation. If the car is really good otherwise and you are interested in buying it then id get it checked over by a mechanic before purchase, or before dismissing it.

The 1.25 84 bhp engine is excellent in Hyundai/Kia. They were fitted in the previous generation of i20 as well. Very easy to drive as it has loads (relatively) of torque.
