Purchasing a Berlingo or similar for private use

    Hi there,
    I want to buy a Caddy/Berlingo/Partner type van and tax it and insure it privately as I am not self employed and would be using it myself. 
    Everyone I ask about this has a different take on it since I know the rules on this have changed.
    Can I just buy a Berlingo from DoneDeal (most likely previously taxed as commercial) pay the road tax (private so not €333, I know) and get in insured without issue? Or are there limitations to who can drive these or will I get caught paying the VAT? 
    Also welcome to some roundabout suggestions as to how I could get commercial tax on the van.
    Any advice would be very welcome.

    Also Berlingo/Partner is available as a car that has more or less same load space as a van.

    You'll find it very difficult to get insured on a van if you haven't got a commercial reason for it. There were only one or two companies doing it and I think even they have stopped.

    As someone above mentioned the Berlingo and Partner come as passenger versions where you can lower/remove seating and use away.

    I know of one and he has heavy privacy tint added, silver tint to silver and it looks grand. Just for bikes and surf gear.

    That's exactly what I'm looking at them for. It's starting to look like the best way to go. It's such a pity, a full on ply lined van would be dead handy, I've had a company one the past two years but recently left the job, hard to go back to the hatchback....
