Son was stopped by police yesterday coming out of belfast going home to lurgan and who told him the braking lights were not working only top rear light. Later found out only the right hand side was blew.Hes in the trade,
They asked was he insuranced and he was and for his licence and took down the details and told him that’s ok and be on his way.
Is that the end of it as his friend said he could get a fine in the post but they would have mentioned that to him at the time, would they not?

I would doubt it, it appears they were simply telling him of a problem that he wasn't aware of. I don't think he'll hear anymore about it to be honest.

Sometimes I wish there was a recognised hand signal for your brake/back light(s) are out. Came upon a car last week with no brake lights, don't think he understood me flashing my lights at him. Saw another car at night with just the DRL's on the front, it was in heavy traffic on a lit stretch of dual carriageway so they didn't notice but several cars were flashing them from behind.

Very annoying, luckily I have a bulb failure warning system on my car, using my trusty Obd eleven I changed it so the rear lights are on with the drl's. I really can't understand why they aren't like that from day one. (172 skoda Octavia)

Because DRL's are designed to allow road users coming towards you to be able to see you easier during daylight hours. They are not designed to be a substitute for headlights. Clowns driving in the dark who don't know the difference between their headlights being on and just DRLs really need to study the manual on how their car's lighting system works and check them regularly. Same people probably drive around for months with blown bulbs, or until someone or the NCT tell them.

He may or may not get a fine. They don't have to tell him at the time whether or not they're going to issue one.

Very few cars actually have this feature which is a shame. I had a 1991 Mazda 232F way back in the late 90's and it had a warning light on the dash for a blown front/rear light. I have never seen it on any car I've had since which is a bit ridiculous.

I had a 92 Tipo that had it as well.

My old Punto had it too, seems pretty standard.

Curious to know what car doesn't have a dash warning for a blown bulb...

Most older cars give no indication.

My '99 Camry doesn't have one (but it does have a tape deck!).

I got stopped a few months back on my early morning commute to work as one of my rear lights wasn't working. No fine, no hassle, got a new bulb later that day.

I had a 99 BMW 3 series that had It, can't imagine any car nowadays not having it to be honest.
