Interested in swimming with the possibility of taking part in a Triathlon. Would 35 mins in a 1000metre swim (1km) be considered a decent time for a man in his early 40's??? Would a triathlon or similar event be possible???

its not bad, a little slow maybe but nothing that cant be improved, if you are already comfortable swimming 1000mtrs there is no reason why you couldn't do a sprint tri (750m swim, 20k bike, 5k run), just keep up the swimming and add a couple of bikes and runs a week and give it a go.

It'd be back of pack for the swim, but well within cut off times in my experience, speaking as someone who's a slow enough swimmer that I have to be at least aware of the cut off times! You may be (probably?) faster in a swimming wetsuit too.

Are you looking at pool or open water swim? Many OW swims don't have cutoffs as such but you may be pulled if you're not making progress. Your time suggests around 26 mins for a 750m swim which is slow but not the worst you'll see. If you want to do a pool tri then TriLoais is a good one for beginners and the cutoff for the pool swim in that is usually 30mins. If doing a pool tri you also wont need to buy or borrow a wetsuit.

the reality is that many people that consider doing their first triathlon cant even swim 1000 meter yet so you have a very nice headstart .
if you have been swimming 5 years 5 times a weeks 35 for 1000 would be very slow lol
if you have only swan 1 year once a year and do only 1 k a session its quite ok.

go for it and select races with a simple swim that is on a slow river or a lake or pool, tris, which are a great intro as you dont need a wetsuit.

btw to answer your question 15 min for 1000 would be kind of good
approx 17.30 kind of the start of "really swimming"
22 would be the beginning of solid swiming . and 26 is nothing to worry about at all if you are not panicky in the open water .
