Rear-ended on Friday - what checks need to be done?

    Hi,

I got rear-ended on Friday evening and I feared, owing to the bang of the impact, that I was getting out to see a fair bit of damage. Luckily, there was only a tiny bit of damage to the bumper - nothing that I could justify having it replaced for, despite the other driver's offer to pay for this. However, I realise that impacts like this can cause damage to the car that might not be readily visible. I'm due to have an oil change this week; should I ask my mechanic to give it a proper look over to check for damage? What kind of things would he be looking for? Cheers.

Open boot and check the spare wheel well and boot floor hasn't been compressed. The boot may be out of alignment and hard to close. After that there is an impact absorbing cross member behind the bumper that may be damaged.

These checks you can do yourself but in answer to the question get your mechanic to inspect it also.

The mechanic will know what to look for, don't worry about telling him what to check, that's what you're paying him for.

In some cases the bumper can pop back into shape as if nothing has happened but the bumper bar/ packing can be damaged behind it. On the other hand there may just be no damage. Was the other car bad?

The above was clearly aimed at the OP to help them assess it themselves as they didn't know what to look at.

Cheers for the advice lads. Some of the internal trim in the boot seems a little misaligned, but in fairness it might have been like that before and I just didn't notice. I'll get my mechanic to give it a look on Friday.

Best of luck and hopefully nothing to worry about. These things happen

You don't mention it but I presume you have the drivers details in case you need to lodge a claim?
