Stanley Stove Cara plus

I got a Stanley Cara plus stove installed 3 weeks ago, we have lit the fire on and off over the last 3 weeks. We lit it on Friday, closed the door and when I went to open it, to refuel, I couldn't open the door. It is completely locked. Has this ever happened to anyone else? Will I have to call out someone from Stanley now to fix it and pay a charge? Completely broke now after buying it and now this happens.

Why not give the installer a call. Surely he will at least give that much of a backup service.

Thanks for your reply, we rang him on Friday and he was at a wedding all weekend. He said we would probably need to call Stanley out as he's never heard of anything like that happening before. I'm terrified they will have to take the stove back off the wall and try prize the door open.

Its happened to us and is a regular issue on a Waterford Stanley range. On ours its due to the wide range of tolerances that WS allow on their stoves along with poor design. Had to replace the whole assembly twice in about 8 years. Next time I'm enlarging the hole in the cast iron door by half a mm.

With the Cara though you have a lot of leverage on the handle so can't really see how it could get stuck? Our range has a knob which doesn't allow enough leverage and breaks off if you over do it.

Suggest to him that he might at least have a look at it before you call Stanley. I can’t believe that he didn’t even offer to look at it.
Btw you could also check the shop that supplied it for advice, but first get installer back.

At worst you have to get it open any way you can and because it got a glass front thats the easiest way in but I'm not sure you get direct access to the back of the lock lever (is there a plate covering it?).

I've had to do this and in the end cut the knob off with a grinder then drilled out the shaft all from the front, but you really don't want to be doing that with a new stove!

How much pressure have you applied to the handle? iirc (check the parts diagram on the WS site) the handle is one piece with a threaded end on it so there really is nothing to break between the handle and the lever. Unless the lever at the end is somehow moving freely on the shaft and you are moving the handle on the outside and the lock is staying in place on the inside.

I will contact the installer tomorrow, I'm sure he won't mind calling out to have a look. But I am hoping it will be covered under warranty if Stanley have to come out. All we did was close the door as normal.

We are moving the handle but it's like the lock on the inside is not connecting on the inside to open up.

Page 20 has a colour picture of where the problem is http://www.waterfordstanley.com/media/2027634/caraplus-stove-manual.pdf . Its not an ideal picture to see exactly what could go wrong but I suspect that the handle is going around and the catch with the washers and nut on behind it isn't moving. If that is the problem you need may need a new part 5. DOOR CATCH - F00928AXX, you can get the nuts and washers but Stanley don't list them as they mix and match to make the door fit on each individual stove.

Just in case I would try pushing quite hard against the handle so it pushing the door shut then trying the handle with the pressure still applied. Do the same and try and take up any play in the part that goes through the door by turning while pushing the door shut yet pulling hard on the handle. Also hold that handle up, right left and down against any play and try. Each time keep the pressure off the catch itself by pushing on the door then letting go as you turn the handle.

Thanks, my Husband tried again to do all that but it just seems the lock is catching on something inside, the handle turns though.
Do you reckon this will be covered by the warranty? We only have it 3 weeks. I'm terrified it will cost a fortune.

100% Waterford Stanleys problem! Might be your fitter adjusted the door if it was a bit loose or tight but I doubt it as they are normally a good fit out of the box. There really is nothing you could have done to cause this yourself

My issue would be how quickly Waterford Stanley get the parts to you if your fitter needs them.

    Hi there,
Just to let you know, I had a technician from Stanley come out today to try open the door on the stove. He ended up having to break the handle to get into the stove. Once he got it opened he could see it wasn't the lock that was the problem, it was a small piece of metal that holds the glass in place on the door, that had come loose and slid down and got caught right where the latch was on the lock so no matter what, when we turned the lock it was still stuck. It's hard to explain it. The technician said it was kind of like a freak accident or problem, he's never seen or heard of it before. Stanley are sending out a new handle and lock and he will fit them on Thursday evening.
Thanks for all your advice anyway.
