I looked at a 152 VW polo today with a mph clock. It doesn't have kph in the background. I presumed it was from the UK but it's not coming up as an import. It's a VW main dealer and the salesman didn't have clue and will get back to me. Any ideas?

How did you verify it isn't an import?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 7,470 ✭✭✭JoeA3

It has to be a UK car.

Ran a check on it. Its clear.

I would have expected the clock to have both mph and kmh in the background at least.

Are you sure it is mph? It might be km/h, but this Polo is extremely slow and loud, so 100 km/h seems like 100 mph... ;)

The logbook will have an indication if it was imported second hand or originally registered in Ireland.

My OH drives a Polo and the speedo only displays kph.

Always thought that was a bit strange.

Yeah I thought the same thing at first but when I drove it, it was definitely mph.

Did you pay for a full report on the car on cartell or a similar website?

An import would not show up on some of these websites unless you pay for the full report. My car is a UK import and the only website that shows this from the basic free information is motorcheck.ie - have you checked there?

I work in the insurance industry and ran the checks but nothing comes up.

Also this is a main dealer. They cant offer an eplanation but they've now offered to change the clock out but it all seems odd.

Sounds a bit odd alright. I bought mine from a main dealer and they knew the full history of the car and where it had come from which is what you would expect.

Dont touch it without getting an explanation that properly checks out.

Worst outcome is that its a ringer of some sort so get a full and proper answer if buying it.

Seems like a bit of a red flag to me. Plenty of other Polos out there. I'd leave this one.

Guaranteed that if the op doesn't buy this car the clock will be changed pronto and the next punter will be none the wiser.!
    Personally I'd pass..

Ring Volkswagen Customer Service. they can check the reg to see if it is an import. I haven't heard of an Irish Polo with MPH before.

Yup. Exactly. They'll tell also tell you if it was ever serviced in any VW dealers and what the mileage was at the time.

That said, it being an import would not put me off buying it...but only if everything else checked out. I've bought all of my cars in the UK for the past 20 years or so...

It's not the fact that the car is an import that the problem is?It's the fact that the dealer didn't volunteer the info. Same happened to me 18 months ago ,went to look at an e class in finglas and I had to coax it out of the dealer that it was an import..was obvious because the clock was also in mph.!

Surely it comes with paperwork showing service history and purchase details? Has it been serviced in Ireland since new? Perhaps it was bought new in the uk but never registered over there and registered as new here?

Spoke with VW ireland they were good to deal with. The car is definitely not an import and the configuration of the car when bought specifically asked for an mph clock.

BMW here did similar. When ordering a brand new BMW and if you don't select the "speedometer dials in kph" box from the options list then you will get the default UK speedometer dials which are in mph and kph.

I'm guessing the original owner just could not get their head around the mph > kph thing.

Could it have been ordered here by a UK/NI customer, or a customer thinking of moving to the UK in future and then pulled out?

Wouldn’t be uncommon for an Irish vw dealer to source a brand new car from uk main dealer stock, this would simply explain the mph clicks and hence not classed as a used import as would have been registered here new so would be the same as any new Car in Ireland, a new import,

Pm me the Reg and I’ll find out for sure for you.

Highly unlikely 1st owner here would request mph clocks when ordering new build car

I think UK cars would have km/h as well as mph. COuld have been imported from somewhere else. It needs properly checking for sure.

VW have said the car was definitely NOT an import....

be careful, when most people talk about imports they usually mean used imports and not new imports

Nope, looking at online images, they have mph only:

I thought it was mandatory for new cars here to have kph only speedometers?

I ordered a 3 series a few years ago with the MPH speedo. Driver lived ROI (just) but spent most of her time in NI, so the request was for the MPH clock, so it's possible and didn't cause any issues with registration - think it was 2011 or 2012

For someone living in the south but working across the border it is advantageous to have both mph an kmh.

Revenue adjust OMSP depreciation values on a monthly basis, not calendar year basis.
