2013 Mazda 6 calipers and discs

I was wondering if anyone has information about the availability of Calipers and Discs for my 2013 Mazda 6. Currently these parts are unavailable online and at motor factors. It seems Mazda are keeping the parts ransom and the dealers are charging extortionate amounts for these parts and repair. I was quoted over €1500 euro to get these replaced which I’m not willing to pay. At the moment the handbrake is stuck and unusable due to them sticking, something to do with a pin rusting, and the rear discs are warped. I’m not quite sure in the technical details but a very reputable local mechanic says they are banjaxed. Is it a case these will come on to the motor factors market soon or is it inevitable I will need to pay the dealer?

It’s also a common problem which is covered under warrenty for newer models. I bought the car in the north so I’m out of the warrenty realm.

I just wish I was able to buy the parts cheaper like you can with the 2012 Mazda 6 at Micks Garage.

    Thanks!

    Daniel

What about getting a quote from an independent garage? Ok you will still have to pay the Mazda price for the calipers but you will save on the discs, pads and labour.

The calipers are approx €300 each ex VAT IIRC.

Can the calipers not be re-furbished?

My local mechanic refurbed them twice but they keep failing again. The screw pins are all rusted like they are being attacked by the elements. On further research I descovered that this is a common problem in these cars. One possible theory is it’s caused by them not being used because the iEloop regen system is slowing the car enough for braking to not occur creating the under usage which is causing problems. The main symptom which is most annoying is not having a useable handbrake. I was lucky to get through the NCT a while back after a refurb.

    I’ll do this today. Thanks.

If you mean the caliper guide pins, then it sounds like a fairly common problem with the rear bakes on the Prius - especially in areas where roads are salted a lot.

I had problems with the rear brakes sticking on mine - one of the pins was completely seized, and the other ones were not in great shape. I got one replacement pin, four new boots for the pins, some suitable lubricant (I used Mintex Cera Tec - do not use copper grease!) and brake cleaner. Cost about €100 total (parts from Toyota dealer) and maybe 3-4 hours DIY job.

You say your discs are warped so maybe they're too far gone, but if it's like the problem I had then you may not need new calipers.

As disc brakes get used a lot less on any car with regenerative braking, I would recommend cleaning/inspection/lubrication at least every 2 years.
