    Hi All,
Im currently in the process for registering for VAT,

Just a quick question on the rate i should be charging,

Most of the work i do involves me coming in as a subcontractor to the main contractor,
And i only supply labour. Ive no employees so its just me im charging for.
Ive had mixed answers to this but from my reading of it its 13.5%

    Thanks in advance

I assume you're in one of the building trades....

If your turnover is more than €37500 for the year then you must register for VAT.

If you're subcontracting, you charge no vat to the main contactor, but you mark your invoices "VAT to be accounted for by the principal contractor" and the main contractor will account for the VAT.

If you're doing work for a private individual or a business that is not a main contractor, then you charge 13.5% in most cases. I say most cases, because there are times in which it is correct to charge 23% but in fairness they don't occur often. However, the best advice I can give is to get yourself an accountant and he will explain in the detail that you need.
